A year of training had finally passed. The Shiganshina Four were now 13 and well acquainted with their fellow cadets.

It was the night before their first big expedition - a trip to the desert. The girls' cabin was filled with whispers as the group finished some last-minute packing.

"Wow! This is so exciting!" Whispered Christa Lenz, a petite blonde who was known for her angelic kindness.

Ymir, a tall, tan brunette with freckles, and the complete opposite of Christa, shrugged. "Nothing's exciting about dying of heatstroke in the desert," she scoffed. Azure nodded in agreement.

"That's why we're packing, Ymir. Nobody is going to die of heatstroke as long as we're prepared."

Mina Carolina - Mina Torel's black-haired name twin - shivered. "I hope we don't die of heatstroke...I wanna get married..."

Mina T patted her back, giving her a sympathetic smile. "I'll make sure you don't die, so don't worry!" She hummed.

Meanwhile, Annie Leonhardt, another petite blonde, sat on her bunk with her palm in her hand. She looked down upon the group of chattering girls. She sighed and rolled her eyes. Annie looked to her left and flinched when she was met with Sasha's wide-eyed grin.

"Annie! Why don't you come on down and join us?" She chirped. Annie scoffed. "Why should I? And how did you even get up here so quietly?"

Sasha shrugged, climbing down from the top bunk and gesturing towards Annie. "Come join us!"

Annie let out a final, loud sigh as she joined Sasha at the base of the bunk. Christa cheered. "Yay! Annie's joining us!"

"Keep it down," Mikasa hissed. "Yeah, we don't want Shadis to hear us," Mina C. agreed. Sasha shivered. "Commander Shadis scares me..." she mumbled, causing the girls' cabin to erupt into giggles.

"Okay, we should do a quick checklist!" Christa suggested. She was met with a few murmurs of agreement. "Alright! Mina C., Sasha, do you guys have the water?"

The two girls nodded. Sasha opened her pack and revealed numerous canisters. "There's two for each girl!" she added.

Christa cheered. "Perfect! And I saw that Mina brought the sandwiches,"

The girls continued chattering into the night. They were assured that the next day, no matter what group they were in, they would definitely succeed. After all, they were completely prepared!

Morning came, and the cadets were split into two groups led by Marco Bodt and Thomas Wagner. Group A, led by Marco, consisted of Eren, Jean, Connie, Sasha, Armin, Christa, Mina T., and Azure. Group B, led by Thomas, consisted of Mikasa, Annie, Mina C., Ymir, Reiner, and Bertholdt.

Group A left first, and they were completely fine until the group took a break, and Mina T. noticed that the majority of their pre-packaged rations were completely missing.

Sasha fell to her knees dramatically, her head in her hands. "Why!? Are the food gods cursing us!?" She cried. Christa patted her back. "It's okay, Sasha! There's got to be something else we can eat out here, right?" She hummed. Sasha nodded through her tears.

"Y'know, maybe we would've still had our food if we weren't going so damn slow!" Eren complained, crossing his arms.

"That doesn't even make sense! And it doesn't matter anymore! Besides, going any faster won't get us extra credit, so why do more than what's required?" Jean argued. Eren rolled his eyes. "Of course, the Military Police wannabe doesn't want to do any work. Keep preaching. Maybe you'll get someone to breathe for you, too," he hissed. Jean grit his teeth. "You wanna say that again, Jaeger?"
