SOOO~! A friend on AO3 suggested I continue the "Experience" drabble. And the thing is, with my drabble, I typically have a set scenario with different endings (usually a bad and a good end, or a true end). Here's the BAD END, and the good end is just below it. This was a blast to write! Hope you enjoy!! ♡♡♡
Warning for BAD END: Y/N is a bit possessive and that rubs off on Papyrus hahaha ;;
"Did she break up with you...?"
"Long before you and I met, Marilyn and I began to drift apart." He sighed, grabbing your hand suddenly.
Slowly, he leaned forward and pulled it to his own face, giving each knuckle a kiss. "But you're my firework now. So let's enjoy this together as a couple... it feels so much better just being here with you!"
You could barely silence that tiny voice inside. It was itching deep inside you, a weak whimper, calling out your name. You tried to listen to what the voice wanted to say, but it was impractical. You were going into overdrive, all good emotions deluding. He had never told you about this girl before.
"Marilyn." You choked out, gripping his hand tightly. He stared deeply into your passionate, intense gaze. He tried to match the passion, his shoulders quivering from intimidation. "Tell me more about Marilyn."
Papyrus's speech fluctuated, his eyebrows scrunching together from turbulence. "COULD WE REFRAIN FROM TALKING ABOUT HER ANY FURTHER, PLEASE? I'VE MOVED ON NOW, THAT WAS A SHORT PHASE IN MY PAST..."
"I'd like to know more." You persisted. Papyrus shuffled backward, sitting more of a distance away. He looked away as the heavens darkened on the horizon, shadows casting over his skull. You felt a freakishly unusual suspicion tug your heartstrings. What was this malicious feeling overtaking the pit of your stomach? Fear? Anxiety? Panic?
"SHE HAD A NICE SMILE, THAT'S WHAT I LIKED MOST ABOUT HER. I'D DO ANYTHING TO SEE IT..." He glanced you over, studying your delirious signs of discomfort. Your hands balled into fists as you rolled them over your knees, pushing against them as if it was some sort of punishment. You faced him intently, waiting for him to resume.
"... SH-SHOULD I REALLY BE TALKING ABOUT THIS WITH YOU? THINGS ARE DIFFERENT NOW, AND I--"
Your tone raised to a scold. "How come you never mentioned her before this, Papyrus?"
He was stricken, acting sheepish. "SHE, WELL, BECAUSE YOU MEAN, YOU'RE SO MUCH MORE AND, MENTIONING HER SEEMED INSIGNIFICANT, I..."
You sighed recklessly, a bit embarrassed by your fierce reactions. He was innocent, entirely too much so. You snapped back to normal, a cold slap on your face to shake you awake.
"How can I make it up to you?"
You had never heard him talk like that before. Like an impostor had stolen his vocals, impersonating him but not really him. The undertones were very peculiar, almost pungent. Your eyes met, a chill racing up your back. He looked deranged with grief.
"Papyrus, I'm sorry." You replied softly, unable to break your gaze. "I didn't mean to pressure you, I don't know what came over me."
"Nonono, my love," He grinned sweetly. "You were completely right. I should have told you about Marilyn sooner. I should have brought her up the minute you blessed me as becoming my partner."
A slip of the tongue, drool spilling down his chin, ravishing words falling out. "I feel a bit odd right now. I think you fixed me. I think I have to make things up to you."
"Papyrus, stop." You pleaded. You were uncertain on what else to say. He was obsessed all a sudden, devoted to pleasing you.
"Let me see your smile..." his breaths were ragged. "I'll do anything to see you smile... Y/N."
You wished you had comforted him correctly the first time. He was spiraling downward merely because you had failed to outwardly appease him. You dragged him into dangerous, uncharted territory and pushed him off the edge. You had never seen the strange way he dealt with uneasiness, and now having witnessed it...
The indignity was immeasurable. You could never forgive yourself.
What can I say? Papyrus would hate being scolded.
Aaaand here's the good end! Hope you enjoy, even though this was a tad bit different!! ♡♡♡"Did she break up with you...?"
It was soothing deep inside you, a weak whimper, calling out your name. You didn't need to listen to it, though; you were already aware of what it had to say. You embraced Papyrus quickly, rising to your knees and crawling to his side.
"Marilyn." You said into his shoulder.
He exhaled deeply and hugged back, pulling you closer. He didn't speak, which was abnormal for him, even in moments of solace. Instead, he continuously sighed, his chest collapsing with each falling breath. "Thank you for telling me about Marilyn."
You sensed his eagerness to respond, but you carried on. "I understand how hard it must have been to break up with her... I'm so sorry. I hope I can do her justice."
"I honestly am glad we broke up!" He responded, hugging you with a comically tight squeeze. "Otherwise, I would have never met you, Y/N!"
A ferocious crackle sounded above your heads, eyes drifting to the sky. You had flinched but Papyrus nearly fell, his arms letting you go so he could steady his posture. You smiled and laughed, another bang echoing across the water. A burst of light flooded the sky, skimming the stars and the tail of the moon.
The firework show had began, and you couldn't help but realize for the first time that they held a hidden beauty. Much like humans and monsters and anything in between, every firework was unique. They all looked the same in the packaging or from afar, but once set off, they soared high, displaying a plethora of colourful brilliance.
Different sizes, shapes, and explosions. Even different amounts of volume.
Papyrus helped you notice this, as he started to excitedly state which firework would be who. He found several for his friends and even one from himself. You were apart of the finale, he had stated, because they save the best for last.
You shamefully could admit your knees were wobbling from the memory of that remark as you both walked home after the show, hand in hand and eyes on your future. And neither of you could wait for the future carnivals to arrive.
