Kirby faced off his creator, glaring at him bravely as Nightmare held Tiff tightly in his grasp, grinning wickedly back at the Star Warrior. This was the end.
One would fall, while the other would stand. They both knew that.
And yet, even with all of his training, Kirby couldn't ignore the unsettling chill that gripped his heart. He tried his best to remember his mentor's words of reassurance, but they were fogged by the feeling of fear.
Perhaps the reason why he was so scared was because Nightmare was his yin. His opposite. After all, Nightmare cherished every emotion that Kirby disliked: Anger, hatred, disgust, greed, malice...
As well as the feeling of being alone...
Kirby remembered with a pang when he was possessed by the Demon Frog. The Demon Frog had multiplied those feelings by a million, and Kirby had been forced to watch, with his very own eyes, how he destroyed Cappy Town.
But what made it worse was that it wasn't really the Demon Frog at all.
It was all him.
The Demon Frog hadn't been controlling him. All it did was multiply his anger. Kirby could have stopped the Demon Frog anytime he wanted to.
And yet, he couldn't.
He had caused all the pain to the cappies, to Dedede, to Meta Knight, to Tiff and Tuff-
Kirby was brought back to the present when he heard Nightmare's echoing laugh. Nightmare opened a gnarled hand and dropped Tiff onto the humongous chess board that seperated the two enemies; one filled with light, and the other filled with darkness.
Nightmare gave out a low, malicious chuckle. "This is checkmate Kirby. The game is up."
Kirby, who was riding one of NME's warp stars, managed a small, "Poyo?" What were they going to do? Play chess? Meta Knight hadn't taught him how to play.
Well. The universe was doomed, if that were the case.
Tiff got up, dusting her clothes off as she glared at Nightmare with uncontrollable anger. "You led Kirby here because this is where you make nightmares!" she exclaimed, her eyes widening as she fit the pieces together.
So no chess? Kirby felt himself slightly sag with relief. He could deal with a fight. After all, it was what he was raised to do.
"But he's not afraid of you and your trick!" she added determinedly.
"We will see about that," said Nightmare, opening his cloak to reveal a blanket of stars. His wide grin stretched to the corners of his head. "Before this match is over, you will both feel the force of my power."
Kirby, who had the fire copy ability, gave another "Poyo!" before spraying Nightmare with fire.
Nightmare only laughed as the fire was absorbed by the cloak, leaving him unharmed.
Tiff took a step back, gasping in horror. "Kirby's usual attacks won't work here!"
Kirby could feel his own power start to waver. After a few moments, his stream of fire became short bursts of spark. He closed his eyes in concentration, willing his attacks to harm Nightmare in any way, but to no avail. Nightmare smiled tauntingly at Kirby, chuckling yet again.
