Sonic woke up, and immediately wished he hadn't. His head felt as if it was pounding against his skull, his stomach was empty, and along with all of that, his whole body ached.

Sonic groaned, arching his back, trying to get in a more comfortable position. That was when Sonic's eyes opened abruptly, and he quickly scanned the room he was in.

He was in his room, back at his house, lying in his bed. Sonic frowned in confusion. When did he get back into his room?

Yesterday, wasn't he on a mission to rescue Kirby? Jogging his memory, Sonic's face fell as he remembered the events that had taken place.

Oh.

Right.

He had been on a mission to rescue Kirby, when it had gone horribly wrong. Eggman had snuck up behind him like a coward, striking him on the arm with a metal claw. The claw had then revealed to be laced with poison, which had gradually begun to weaken Sonic, up to the point where moving was not an option.

Kirby had arrived at the scene just when things were looking bad, seemingly escaping his prison without the help of the others, making the rescue mission pointless. He had defeated the Eggman robot all by himself, destroying it from the inside rather than the outside, where its defenses had been stronger.

Sonic shivered, feeling cold despite being underneath covers. He burrowed himself deeper in the blankets, hugging himself in an attempt to warm his frozen body.

"Faker?"

Sonic jumped, and he mentally cursed himself for not hearing Shadow open the door. Even his ears were feeling as unwell as the rest of his body.

Behind him was Kirby, trailing after Shadow like a duckling following a mother duck. It was only the two that came into the room. Sonic furrowed his brow. Where were the others? Were they also injured?

"The others are asleep. You woke up really early this time, Faker," Shadow reassured him, as if he could read the blue hedgehog's thoughts. He checked his wrist communicator. "Four in the morning, to be exact."

Sonic managed a weak grin. "Well, I'm a stubborn hedgehog. I gotta do what I gotta do. That includes waking up before the sun has even realized the day's begun."

Shadow scoffed, crossing his arms while flicking an ear dismissively. "And that's what get's you killed, Faker," he pointed out, walking over to Sonic and crouching beside his bed so he was face to face with him. Kirby hopped onto the bed, lying down next to Sonic and closing his eyes. Soon after the puffball was sound asleep, his breathing getting slower and more relaxed as time passed.

"How did you know I was awake?" Sonic asked, wrapping himself tighter in the blankets until he looked like a hedgehog burrito. Shadow nodded over to Kirby, who was still lying peacefully as he slept.

"He can sense emotions, remember? I think he was already awake, obviously worried about you. When you woke up, I guess he could sense that you were distressed or whatever you're feeling right now, and he woke me up." Shadow sniffed scornfully. "And now here I am."

Sonic felt his lip twitch upwards. He would bet on anything that Shadow had also been awake, waiting for a warning from Kirby when he awoke. He's hiding from me, isn't he?

"Sure, sure," Sonic said dryly, rolling his eyes. "I know you were worried about me, Shads."

Shadow gave out a threatening growl, scowling, but Sonic knew his black and red counterpart well enough to know that he didn't take this rebuke seriously. "I was not. Why would I be worried about a faker like you?"
