Connie's P.O.V
I woke up the next morning, a sick feeling in my stomach. I shook it off, and climbed out of bed. I grabbed some clothes and got changed, then did the rest of my daily duties.
When I walked downstairs, no one was there. Normally my brother was at least home, but I didn't have time to worry about it. I didn't have time to eat breakfast either, I woke up late, and had to get to school.
I packed up my stuff and walked out the door. I didn't see my dad's car, so I knew he had gone to work, like usual. There were no signs of where my brother was, so I just kept walking.
I made it to school and walked inside to my locker. I put in my combination and opened the metal door. I got everything I needed out of my backpack, and put my bag in the locker.
I shut my locker, and continued to first. I sat down, took out my book, and started to read." Hey nerd. " I heard. I looked up and saw Cheryl, what did she want?
" Yes? " I asked.
" What are you doing later, y'know after school? " she asked.
" Uh, nothing, probably. " I said quietly.
" Good, here do my homework later, it's due Friday. " she said slamming her paper on my desk.
" What, no! That's yours, you do it. You always talk about how smart you are, you should be able to do it. " I said glaring up at her without thinking. She slammed her hand down on my table, making me jump a little.
" Listen here, brat. I said I wanted you to do my homework, so do it. If you have a problem with that, then you can suck it up, the world ain't perfect. " she said.
" Neither are you. " I mumbled.
" What did you say, I couldn't hear. " she asked, playing dumb. I stood up and put both my hands on the desk.
" I said, neither are you! You're not perfect, Cheryl. And, I bet the reality is you don't know how to do almost everything on your homework, so you want me to do it. Just so you can keep your so called perfect reputation. Well, stop acting like you're better then everyone else here! " I snapped. It felt good to stand up for myself, but I knew it was a mistake. The adrenaline rush of the moment took my mind off the consequences though.
Sheryl stood there for a second, just staring at me. Then her expression turned to a smile, and her eyes glared into mine." Why you little. " she started.
" Okay class, settle down and head back to your seats. " my teacher said as she walked in. Sheryl just glared at me, and walked to her seat. I sighed and sat back down in my seat.
My teacher started her lesson about molecules and atoms. I couldn't focus though, I was still in shock over what had just happened. I had never really done that before, it felt good. But, I knew it wasn't over.
The bell rang and I got up and grabbed my stuff, walking out of the classroom. As I did, I sneakily threw Cheryl's homework in the trash. On the way to second I saw Cheryl talking to Valerie, I hoped she wasn't being mean.
I walked into History, and my teacher immediately told me to step back into the hallway. I was confused, but did as he said. A few minutes past till he came out." So, Connie, I have something I need to talk to you about. " he started.
" Okay? " I said, scared for what he was going to talk to me about.
" Well, I've looked at your scores and grades from past years in History, they've been really high. And from what I've seen so far this year, it seems like you have a very big intrest in History, yes? " he explained.
" Yes sir. " I answered, relieved I wasn't in trouble.
" Well, I offer a special class that's thirty minutes before school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This class offers some content that you wouldn't learn till ninth grade, some even tenth grade. So I wanted to offer this to you, because you're qualified for it. " he offered. I was internally screaming, I was so happy. This was perfect.
" Yes! Oh my, yes, thank you sir. " I stuttered, a huge smile on my face.
" Great, classes with start next Tuesday. " he said.
" Okay. " I said walking back into class and to my seat. My teacher came back in and started to talk. I as so excited, I got the opportunity to learn about more history. Finally something worked out in my favor.
Before I knew it, it was time for Physical Education. I walked down the hall to the, and into the gym. I saw Valerie, but she didn't look over at me. She was talking to some other girls, Soc girls.
I didn't mind, she was aloud to have other friends, so I didn't care. I just walked over to my spot on the bleachers and sat down, waiting for my teacher." So, we finished the push up test, now for the pull up test. " she said. The pull up test actually wasn't that bad, at least not for me.
" Do we get to have partners? " some kid yelled out.
" No. The way this test will work is I'll have some stations going that you guys can go to, then I'll call three or four of you over to take your test. " the teacher explained. I was okay with the thought of stations, I liked having stations, they provided a variety of stuff to do.
" So, with that being explained, if your name startes with an A come with me. " my teacher said walking over to the other side of the gym. About five kids followed her. Everyone else was free to go to any station they wanted.
I looked around and thought about where I wanted to go, but I didn't really know anyone other then Valerie, so I didn't have anyone to go to stations with.
I just sat there, some kids occasionally staring at me, I just looked the other way, until I got hit in the head. I turned to see who had hit me." Whoops sorry, I didn't see you there. " a girl said with a laugh, that wasn't a surprise, but it was one of the girls Valerie was with. I glanced over at Valerie, she just looked away. That was the surprise, and a painful one. I didn't hold it against her though.
" Anyone whose name starts with a B, come here! " my teacher yelled. Seven kids made their way over to her. I stood up and started to walk, but I stepped on the shoelace of my converse, practically falling on my face.
I turned red, as I stood up. Kids were laughing, pointing, and staring. I just stared down at my feet, playing with the sleeve of my jean jacket, avoiding looking at anyone.
My knee was burning, and I looked down at it. It had rubbed up against the gym floor and got a little irritated. I couldn't go a day without something embarrassing or painful, or if I was lucky, I'd get both." Okay, C's. " the teacher said. Here we go. I walked over there along with two other kids. The other kids went before me, scoring a five and a three, now it was my turn.
" Okay, Connie, your turn. " Ms. Lee said pointing to the pull up bar. I stood on the step stool and grabbed on the bar.
" Ready. " I said.
" Okay. " she said taking the stool from under my feet. I did one pull up after another, taking all my anger and embarrassment as motivation. Then I let go of the bar and let gravity bring me down.
" Done. " I said looking up at her.
" A solid ten, not bad ma'am. " Ms. Lee complimented.
" Thank you. " I said with a smile.
