I broke away, my head whipping towards the house. There were no lights on inside the house, but I knew that somebody was awake. Maybe it was my dad. He was always awake until stupid hours, finishing work. Maybe he had gotten up for a drink or something. I turned back to Toby, and was momentarily mesmerized by the way the moonlight made his jawline look more straight, and the way his eyes looked down at me, shining.

"What time is it?" I asked, randomly. Toby looked at me with a strange expression for a moment, before checking his watch.

"Twenty past one. Are you tired? Do you need to go inside, and sleep?" He sounded concerned, and it made me melt. He was such a loving, caring person. And I loved him for it.

"No, I'd rather stay here with you." I smirked, before reaching up to kiss him. Toby smiled, his lips meeting mine. After a few seconds, I heard a bang from the house, and a muffled 'shit'. I turned to Toby.

"Maybe, on second thoughts, I should go inside. You'll be here tomorrow?" I asked, hoping he would be here, even if only for a short while.

"Of course. I'll be here as long as you want me." He replied, before giving me a lingering goodnight kiss. Then he left, carefully returning to his own home. I turned around and tip toed back up to the house. I passed my dad, who seemed to have fallen asleep on the sofa, and crept to my room.

The next morning, I found I had a message from Aria. She asked me to meet her outside at school. It sounded pretty urgent, if you asked me. I agreed, before placing my phone on the desk. I had quite a while before school started, so I decided to go and make myself some breakfast.

"Good morning, honey. I got you bagels. Is that alright?" My mum asked. She handed me a plate of bagels, and looked at me expectantly. To be honest, I was unsure of how to answer. The only time my mum made breakfast for me was when I was a kid. As I got older, I was expected to find myself something to eat, or just skip breakfast. However, she occasionally made me food, such as when I was ill, or when she was apologetic. And considering I wasn't running a fever, I was wondering what was wrong.

"Erm, sure. Thanks." I said, taking a bite from a bagel as I sat down at the rarely used table. Melissa came in, looking like a mess. Her hair looked like a dark halo around her head, sticking up everywhere. Her pyjamas were all ruffled, as if she had slept in many different positions. Or she looked like she had hurriedly thrown her clothes on.

"Morning, sweetie. Breakfast is on the table. I'll make some coffee." Mum said, busying herself around the kitchen. Melissa didn't even pay attention, sliding into a seat. She looked like a zombie, like sleep was this undiscovered thing she lacked. I wondered what was wrong, but then again, I didn't feel like asking. She would probably bite my head off, as she wasn't really a morning person.

"Mum, is there a special occasion today?" I asked, wanting to know the reason behind her behaviour.

"No, not really, dear. Now eat your bagels, you've got to get ready." She said, placing mugs of coffee in front of Melissa and me. Melissa didn't even bother to thank her, and just dug in. Something weird waa definitely going on.

That's when my mother's phone rang, and she cursed under her breath. She picked up her phone, studying the number before declining the call.

"Shouldn't you answer that?" I asked, wondering who she was ignoring. Was it a customer? Colleague? Family member?

"It's nobody important." She replied, before rushing into the next room. Melissa grabbed her plate and mug, and made off towards the door.

"Where are you going?" She turned back to face me, as if her look could tell me something her words couldn't.

"To eat in the barn." Was all she said before dissapearing. I was left alone with a half eaten bagel and cold coffee.

My mother's phone beeped, so I checked she wasn't around. I grabbed her phone, and checked the missed calls. The name on the screen confused me for a second.
