Prologue

"You must miss him a lot," a quiet voice remarked.
Gail turned her head towards her friend Amandine and nodded slowly. Everything she did hurt.
Her thoughts hurt.
Her body hurt.
Even the words she spoke hurt.
"Yeah, I do," she whispered hoarsely.
It had been a week since Gail's best and only male friend had disappeared. Kenneth.
Gail and the boy had been friends as long as she could remember. They had been there for each other through good and bad times.
Even after they had both changed they stayed friends.
Maybe I should explain this part to you.
Oh, how rude of me. I haven't even introduced myself yet. My name is Edith. I am the narrator of this tale.
Back to the story.
You see, the world in which this story takes place probably isn't the world you live in. No, it's a world full of magical creatures and powerful breeds you never would've thought existed.
The population of Fortania mostly consists out of humans. They live together peacefully with other beings.
Gail and Kenneth both belong to that category, seeing that Gail was a fairy and Kenneth a neko, a half-cat half-human.
"It's just... I really can't believe Kenneth ran away. He would never do that without at least telling me," Gail said bitterly. She really didn't want to believe her friend had left her.
When Kenneth hadn't shown up for school last Friday she hadn't been too worried. It wasn't rare that someone got sick that time of the year. But when she received a phone call that evening from Kenneth's mom asking her if she knew where her son was, she got a bad feeling.
The adults, being the school staff and his parents, had declared that Kenneth had probably just felt a bit rebellious and would soon return.
A week later and there still wasn't any sign of the brown haired neko.
"Sweetie, he'll come back. Maybe he just... needed some alone-time," Amandine tried to comfort Gail.
While they continued talking they didn't notice the 17-year old boy lurking in the shadows, watching the little fairy's every move.
