He was sitting on the second last row of the bleachers, leaning back against top row, looking exquisite even in his blue hooded jacket and grey trackpants. His hands were sunk deep inside his jacket pockets, trying to shield themselves from the cold.
It had completely slipped my mind, that the soccer field was completely snow-covered. I bit my tongue realizing my mistake. He had been sitting here on my instruction, all this while.
"Hey!" I shouted to him, "You want to go inside? Its freezing out here." I pulled my jacket tightly trying to keep myself warm.
"I like the sun here." Avinash shouted back motioning me with his hands to join him.
I started to stomp across the snow-covered field, but then remembered the words of the article. 'Be presentable'. I tried to follow Mandy's advice and attempted to sway my hips. It was impossible to sway my hip while I traversed through this snow sheeted field. I was quite sure that I resembled someone with a back pain walking like that, therefore I returned to my stomping.
"Don't you feel cold?" I huffed once I reached him.
"You told me to wait here," he said nonchalantly "besides you will get acclimatized to the cold after a while." Hesitantly I climbed up the steps and sat down keeping an arm's distance between us.
"Hey Avinash listen, I am really sorry for being rude to you earlier. I was worried about something else and you appeared at the wrong moment so all my frustrations came out on you." I rushed my words.
"Since you and I are going spend most of our time together, in the coming months, there is a strong chance that we may become friends." He stretched his lips in a lopsided grin "I prefer my friends calling me Avi, not Avinash, so in anticipation of our future friendship, you can call me Avi."
"Yeah we are going to be friends with benefits." Damn did I just say that "I mean we will be benefiting each other academically." I hastily explained myself.
"You are funny Lady Hulk," Avi laughed making the corners of his eyes wrinkle.
"Why do you call me Lady Hulk?" I frowned.
"Oh...well remember the first time we saw each other. You had smashed our senior in front of everyone." He pretended to punch the air, imitating me. "That is what Hulk does right. Smash. Since you are a girl, therefore Lady Hulk."
"You remember that?" I could feel my lips parting into a broad grin.
The courtyard wasn't the first time I saw Avinash though. Rather I had seen him for the first time in the corridor outside the cafeteria, but obviously he hadn't noticed me then.
"Are you kidding? The whole college remembers it." He said looking at me incredulously, "You were a SHERO that night. I wish I had your balls to stand up against my seniors when I was ragged."
"That is the thing," I pouted, "I don't have balls."
"Ofcourse you don't." He shook with laughter.
"I don't think that is the only popular memory people in this college have of me." I lowered my head as the memories of me puking in the cafeteria flooded back.
"You know, what happened that night in the cafeteria was an accident." Avi shifted his body to face me. "Everyone has such a moment, and only those who are jealous of you, will remember it, to feel better knowing that the perfect Meenakshi Banerjee too has flaws."
"What? Why will someone be jealous of me? And I am not at all perfect." I looked at him to make sure he was not joking.
"Because you girl, have all the qualities of a great spy. You are bold, fearless, intelligent, a little geeky but that is needed, not to mention you lie quite well." He winked.
