Jay pulled the bag off his head as fast as he could. He looked around wildly, catching a glimpse of a black SUV hurrying around the corner. They had let him go. Just like that. He tasted blood in his mouth and the back of his head throbbed from when he had hit the pavement. He stood up shakily, dizzy from not eating or drinking for the past 48 hours. Jay looked around at his surroundings. He was in an alley in who knows where, he didn't have his phone, gun, or badge, and he looked liked a hobo. The sunlight burned his eyes after being in the dark for so long. He wandered out of the alley. There were people walking down the sidewalk, purposely avoiding him because of his bedraggled appearance. Jay knew that nobody would listen to him if he told them he was a cop. He looked around, spotting a convenience store across the street. The bell chimed as he staggered in. "Excuse me" he said the the man at the cash. The man spun around, a hidden look of distrust in his face when he laid his eyes on the person in front of him. "Can I help you?" "Call 911" Jay spoke quickly. "Ask for intelligence. Tell them that Detective Jay Halstead is down here." The man didn't look convinced. "If you're a detective, where's your badge?" Jay spoke again. " My partner and I were abducted. They took everything I had, including my badge. You've gotta believe me!" The man still looked uncertain. "Please! My partner's life is on the line! Please!" Jay shouted, his words slurring together. "Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to leave" the man responded. Jay reached over the counter, grabbing the man's collar and pulling him close to his face. "This is my partners life we're talking about! If she dies, the blood is on your hands! And you don't want to go down for murder of a police officer." Jay spoke in a angry whisper. "That's 25 years to life, buddy, and I will make damn sure you will never get out. You hear me?" Jay released the mans collar. His vision started to swim. "Hey, man. You alright?" The man behind the counter asked, grabbing Jay's arm to steady him. Black spots clouded Jay's vision and the last thing he saw was the man hurriedly reaching for the phone.
