The ambulance sirens faded into the distance. Voigt stood outside the store, a small piece of paper in his hand. He read the note to himself before he shared the contents with the rest of the unit.
27 West Avenue. 4 P.M. Have Detective Halstead bring my father to entrance 8. If there are any other cops, Erin's dead.
The words sent a chill down his spine. He kept repeating the words over and over again in his head, trying to make sense of them. He had been in situations like this before, but none of them had been this personal. Voigt felt something he had never felt before. Vulnerability. Voigt was a hard man to take down. Lucas had hit him where he knew it would hurt him the most. "Voigt!" A voice snapped him out of his thoughts. He spun around to see Atwater hurrying towards him. "The note. What's it say?" Another voice followed. Ruzek and Olinsky jogged up to him. They stood in silence as Voigt read the note, visibly trying not to let his emotions get the best of him. "So, we do what the note says. Then what?" Ruzek asked. "We let a murderer back onto the streets? IA will have our heads!" "We treat this like a normal hostage situation" Voigt answered. "We try to talk him down, if he doesn't budge, we shoot him." "But, what if-" Atwater started. "No what ifs. We do it according to procedure, and that's final" After Voigt had said this, he turned and walked away from the group. He climbed into his SUV and rested his head on the steering wheel, fear and uncertainty creeping inside of him. All he could do was pray that everything would go smoothly. His heart thumped in his ears. He couldn't think. He couldn't breath. He couldn't move. He was frozen.
