After Grandma signed me out, we were quickly on our way to her house. my legs were still covered in wraps and bandages but the hospital staff reassured me that as long as I took care of my legs that I shouldn't have to have the bandages on for too long.
But that wasn't my main concern at the moment, given that I had many things to worry about, that didn't make the long, long list.
Instead, my head was wrapped up in where my Mother was and why she would do the things they said she did, what reason would she have? She was changing sure but in a good way, she wanted to reconnect with me, she was becoming more like the Mom that I used to know before Dad's accident.
Speaking of changes, I sneaked a glance at Grandma from the corner of my eye 'I wonder if she's still the same as she was seven years ago?' If she noticed me side eyeing her she didn't make it known.
She just kept smiling and humming with a blank stare as she drove. I couldn't help but lightly shiver 'Not gonna lie, that's kinda creepy' I glanced down at my phone that was laying on my lap; anticipating a text or a call from Tanner any minute.
'No doubt he'll ask me a million questions, like he always does' I faced the window, creeped out but not wanting to say anything about it 'Maybe it's just me? I mean she is letting me live with her for awhile' I frowned and looked at the passing scenery, now feeling guilty.
'Here she is; taking me in without a complaint and I'm making a big deal out of nothing'
"So! How have you been? I mean, considering with everything that has happened, I can't imagine too well but rest assured, none of that will happen at my home" she was as chipper as she could be when she said that and I sat in silence for a moment.
'I don't know how I should take that'
As I contemplated my answer my phone rang and I discretely sighed in relief 'Thank you Tanner' I looked at Grandma and pointed to my phone "It's an important call, do you mind if I take it?" She looked a little miffed but I was fine with that 'Sorry Grandma but I'm a little uncomfortable at the moment' she waved her hand in a dismissive gesture.
"Oh go ahead dear, I know that you would rather talk to your boyfriend than to your old Grandma" I nearly choked on my spit at that 'Boyfriend?' I looked at her, trying to gauge whether she was trying to guilt trip me or if she was serious.
'I think she's trying to guilt trip me'
I eyed her as I answered the phone "Heeeyyy, I know that this is probably a bad time to call you but I wanted to know if you wanted to go to a fair that stops here in a few days, you in?" I bit the inside of my cheek, pretending to think it over.
'I know I'm going to say yes but he doesn't and I don't want to seem too enthusiastic about going out somewhere with him' "Hmm, yeah that sounds cool" I said casually as Grandma watched me from the corner of her eye.
'Again that's a liiiiitle unnerving Grandma' I tried not to notice her watching me but it was difficult for me to hold back my facial expressions.
"Hey Mars, are you okay? You sound a little nervous here" leave it to Tanner to notice my emotions 'How does he always do that?' I was quiet for a moment "Yeah I'm just really excited see you, what's the plan?" Now it was his turn to be quiet for a minute, making me quirk a brow.
"Hello-"
"...I KNEW YOU MISSED ME!" I flinched at his loud booming voice and moved my phone away from my now ringing ear which made Grandma look at me with concern "Are you alright dear? I could hear that boy from all the way over hear and let me tell you, I don't have the best hearing" I nodded with my face scrunched up in pain.
"Yeah I'm okay Grandma, just a little...surprised at how loud he was" she still looked concerned but thankfully let it go and I slowly brought my phone back up to my ear "Yeah can you not do that? I'd like to keep my hearing thank you" he chuckled over the phone.
"Hmmm, I don't know but I'll try" I rolled my eyes and smiled faintly "You just rolled your eyes didn't you?" I go silent with my mouth agape and eyes wide 'He knows me way too well for the short time we've known each other' I later let out a 'psh' sound in mock innocence.
"Ha! I knew it!" I shook my head at his smug tone. occasionally I could see Grandma eyeing me with narrowed eyes and I sighed as I figured that she was probably upset that I've been on the phone for awhile.
"Hey Tan, I have to go, I'll talk to you later okay?" He replied with a "Yup! See ya" I look over at my Grandma when I said that and saw her grip relax on the steering wheel 'She said she was okay with me talking on the phone so why is she suddenly mad?' I decided to just shrug it off.
'So far she's being nice Maria, a little...weird but nice'
I stared out of the window the rest of the drive to her home. the sun was setting and street lights were flickering on and I was absentmindedly looking around out at the passing scenery when my eyes were drawn to a familiar pair of glowing yellow eyes.
I gasped and stiffened as I clutched my seat tightly and I couldn't stop myself from trembling in fear; having flashbacks of the day I saw them, starting from running away from the creep that was chasing me and the yellow eyes that took him and presumably killed him.
'Why are they here? Was it just a reflection from the lights?...and why did they look like the monsters eyes?' I didn't notice but my breathing was slow and it felt like barely any air made It into my lungs.
'It can't be...'
I jumped when I felt a hand touch my shoulder and immediately my hand moved into a raised fist; ready to strike whatever touched me when I saw Grandmother looking at me with slight fear and shock in her eyes.
"Are you alright dear? You're pale and shaking" apparently at one point while I was in a fear induced daze she had stopped the car and pulled over.
I looked at her with tears in my eyes "I'm sorry Grandma" I burst into tears at what my fear almost made me do.
She shushed me and pulled me into a warm and comforting hug; my tears were no doubt soaking her shoulder and shirt but she didn't push me away and instead she had slowly started to gently pet my head.
"Did you see something? You don't have to tell me everything dear, but I would like to know what's troubling you" I sniffled and raised my head up "I just thought I saw something go by but it was probably nothing, it just, reminded me of...something that happened awhile ago" I went to wipe some tears off when she stopped me and gave me a little napkin.
"Here dear, it will work much better and it won't leave a residue as much" I took it gratefully and whispered a thank you.
"We're almost home and I can assure you that Grandma's not going to let anything happen to you"
