I was absolutely seething on the walk back to the house 'So not only has Grandma been hiding the book from Dad but she also brushed off everything while knowing exactly what was happening, why would she do that?' Poor Tanner was still lost on what was happening, I didn't purposely leave him out of the loop but there was only one thing on my mind.
'Get.that.book'
"Sooo I'm guessing we're mad at ole Gran Gran?" Tanner asked carefully, for the past half hour he's been trying and failing at making me laugh "Yes Tanner, we're mad at 'Gran Gran' she knows about what has been happening and not only that but she has a book about it! A.Freaking.Book!" The look of pure surprise on his face was comical and it almost made me laugh, keyword almost.
"Oh" and naturally after a few minutes I felt bad for snapping at him and I turned to look at him with a small albeit weak smile "I'm sorry Tanner, thank you for helping me see my mom" he made a waving motion with his hand "Nah don't worry about it, I'd be pretty ticked too" finally I let out a small laugh, making him smile.
And then there was only silence...for a solid minute.
"But like, are we going to jump ole Gran Gran? Cause I feel like I'll lose ya know? just sayin" I snorted "No, we're not jumping her and I know full well you wouldn't be able to beat her in a fight" he briefly stopped walking and pursed his lips "Wow thanks" thankfully the rest of the walk was more peaceful then before.
Well as peaceful as it can get with Tanner there.
When we finally arrived at Gran Gra- Grandmas house, she was already standing on the porch with her arms crossed with an unreadable expression on her face and I didn't understand what she could possibly be mad at 'She can't know that I saw my mom can she?' Tanner and I slowed down our pace and glanced at each other, both of us having looks of concern.
'This can't be good'
"So, where have you two been? Hm?" I sucked in a deep breath, trying to come up with a plan "No where in specific" her jaw clenched at my vagueness and she glanced at Tanner who stiffened when her eyes landed on him "Well, if it isn't the knight in shining armor" I narrowed my eyes at the jab.
"Leave him alone Grandma" I practically gritted the words out and it took all my strength to not snap and yell at her 'She knew what was happening all this time' she turned back to me and I held back a flinch at the look of pure unbridled rage on her face "I know what you did and where you went Maria" her tone was low and threatening, giving me slight trembles of brief fear.
But my anger and hurt overthrew the fear.
"Grand-" I clenched my jaw as I was almost immediately interrupted by yelling "No! I told you, you will not go and see your mother! I forbad it, and what do you do?" Her voice rose as her eyes bulged in pure rage "You did it anyway! you ungrateful little-!" Tanner interrupted her with a loud cough "I wouldn't finish those words lady" his eyes were narrowed and there was a warning in his voice.
'Huh, now that I think about it, I've never seen him angry till now'
I stared at her with equal anger if not more 'Is she being serious? She can't be right?' When she stood her ground I scoffed "Why? upset because she knows about the book?" She gritted her teeth with clenched fists.
I was determined to not let anything stop me 'I won't let anything or anyone stop me' Tanner who was already back to his normal self made an awful attempt at whistling that sounded more like a dying bird then a whistle when he saw the look on my face.
