Chapter Nineteen

Care and Remorse

Chasen still trusted his shortcut and his familiarity of the place after one hour of maneuvering through it. The hoodlums were far behind them, if in luck, loses their bearings. He wonders if the idiots phoned their boss and told them Chasen killed some of their men single handedly. He handled easily the two weary men in the cave, bombed the others, snaps Eli's neck, stabbed Kali's chest and gave a well deserved deadly swing; he saw his head extending just before he carried Natalie away from the cave. Too bad for the Kali guy he didn't have a single bit of her, well maybe glimpses the skin when he cut her clothes off and that's far he gotten.

"Can we have a rest?" she muttered nervously and he heard the anxiety in her tone; it made him smile guiltily. "My ankle keeps getting worst every hop I made."

He stops and supported her slump against the wall before he drops beside her knees. It was quite dark in the boulders crevice. They can see slightly the brilliant dark sky above them. The stars were like diamonds and there was half moon. There is no sound beside their panting; no signs of approaching footstep or any raining bullets. They were quite at ease at the moment.

She reaches for her ankle again and tried to adjust the torn clothe that surrounds it. The pain was so intense she felt herself drifting asleep. She had forgotten her plans to add another layer of clothes to secure her injury more.

Chasen wanted so badly to ignore the exposed front of the girl beside him but he was a man after and he keeps his eyes sliding to stare at it. Well Natalie was passing out anyway -she won't see him taking advantage. The air blew in their enclosed space as the night past to midnight. The darkness was their advantage as they will be untraceable from the men after them, but the tiredness and hunger was wearing them off. The shiver in her skin finally made him see sense that she needed the warm for tonight other than him. He shrugs off his black army coat and covered her with it. He had another black shirt in his bag pack and that will do for tonight. The end of this narrowed crevice will be a fifty meters wide inhabitant of trees then the edge of it is another fifteen meters high drop, but below it will be pool of water coming from a crack between the stone mountains. The beauty of the pool below was an underwater passageway, a shortcut to reach the tribes he wanted to go. They just needed to swim seven meters under, search for the opening and swim another six meters to arrive at the place. From there it will be another two kilometers walk through thick vegetation of trees.

He adjust the clothe wrapping his forehead and made it tight as possible. It was stinging alright, but this is nothing compare to the training he had in SEAL. He slump on the floor watching the dark sky greeting his eyes. What a rollercoaster had been, his messed life. Everything seem to flashed in his mind from the time he first entered the government, learned intensive training from his uncle then finally joined the SEAL training. After he passed his trainings he turned into this coldhearted beast who always loves the idea of overruling the weak and hunt bad people. He should hunt himself, because he is included in the list. And now everything was backfiring towards him and he manages to include an innocent girl from Alaska -yeah and now you manage to call her innocent -why not before dumb ass, he thought. The kindness she showed despite what he had done to her; the truthful words she snaps at him in the cave still stings him painfully. He never fully understood his parents' point of view because of his arrogant mind, but now everything was clarity. The Barry girl showed him that. Her display of kindness was the reason why. If only she didn't patch him, he would have left her there. But the stupid kindheartedness she showed astonish him more than ever. One will surely point a gun in her face yet her response was offering a bouquet of flowers -for peace offering. How can you response such harmless act?
