10. Dodgeball

Emma's point of view

I walked towards Gym class for 6th period on Monday. I was joined by Lilly and Connor. On our way to the gymnasium, they told me about dodgeball. So far, it sounded terrifying.

"Can we...Can we change the subject. I'm kind of nervous about this dodgeball game", I said.

"Oh, here's something we can talk about. Betty Brant is having a party tonight. You should come", Lilly says.

"Will I have time to do homework?" I asked.

"Em, you can do your homework before the party", Connor says as if that were obvious.

"Oh man", I said. The three of us stopped walking. "What will I wear?"

Lilly chuckled. "We'll figure that out after we're not late to gym class".

We continue walking to gym class.

After changing into our gym clothes, me, Lilly and Connor did some stretching before we played dodgeball. Beside us, MJ sat on the ground, reading a book.

"You sure you don't want to join us MJ?" Lilly asked.

MJ looked up from her book. She shook her head as she looked at us. "Gym class isn't really my thing", she said. I looked at Lilly and Connor, who shrugged their shoulders.

Peter and Ned joined us. They stretched with us until the coach blew his whistle. Me, Lilly, Connor, Peter and Ned were on one side. Behind us, MJ reads her book. On the other side of the gym was, of course, Flash and his gang. Along with other kids that I didn't know.

When the coach blew the whistle, everyone threw balls at each other. I picked up a ball and threw it at a boy. He dodged it and grabbed another ball off the ground. He threw it at me. Before it could hit me, Peter jumped in front of me. He fell to the ground.

"Peter!" I shouted. MJ walked up to us. I looked up when I heard Flash and his friends laughing. I glared at them and so did MJ.

"Game on", she said angrily. She grabbed two balls from the ground. She handed one of them to me and threw the other one at one of Flash's friends.

"We'll Avenge you Peter", I said, before throwing the ball at the boy who threw the ball.

Ned, Connor and Lilly stood next to us and threw balls at the other team.

"No, We'll Avenger you, Peter", Lilly says. I gave her a quick high five before I threw the ball, hitting one of Flash's friends.

His friend fell to the ground. Flash looked at us with a glare. "Get them",he said to his other friend. His friend threw a ball at us.

The ball hit Ned in the face. Ned fell to  the ground. "Ned!" Connor shouted.

"Everybody Run!" MJ shouted. We all agreed and spread across the one side of the gym. Me and MJ ran to the left. Connor and Lilly ran to the right. "Why did I get myself into this?"

"To Avenger your boyfriend", I said as if that were obvious. "Going to the party tonight?"

"Less talking! More trying to stay alive!" Connor shouted.

One of the balls hit Lilly. She fell to the ground. "Lilly!" Me, MJ and Connor shouted in unison.

"Avenger me!" She shouted.

I caught a ball in my hands and threw it at a player on the other team. It hit one of the girls. A ball was about to hit MJ, but Connor jumped in front of her. He landed on the ground.

"No!" MJ shouted.

"Tell my story!" Connor shouted. I grabbed MJ's hand and we ran away from the balls.

"I wonder if this is the reason why I was in that Mansion for most of my life. If my brother was trying to protect me from dodgeball, I can see why!" I said.

"That makes no sense", MJ said.

"Well what does?" I asked. I grabbed a ball before it could hit MJ.

"Nice reflexes", She said.

"Thanks", I said before throwing the ball, hitting Flash's other friend. I was about to throw a ball at Flash, but I got distracted when a ball hit MJ.

She stood there in silence before looking at me and said, "Avenger us".

I noticed that I was the only one left on my team. The other team had at least 5 students. I grabbed two balls and threw them. I hit two students. Make that 3 students left on the team.

"If Emma, had three balls and threw them at three people, how many people would be standing?" I asked.

"Three", Flash says.

"Actually 0", I said before I dodged a ball. I dodged the balls by doing cartwheels, rolls, limbo stance. I was about to throw a ball at one of the players until a ball hit me in the face. I fell to the ground.

Peter, MJ, Ned, Lilly and Connor ran towards me. "Hey guys. Did I Avenger you?" I asked.

"Your Avenging might need a little work", MJ said. I nodded in agreement. A boy walked towards us and helped me up.

"Are you alright?" He asked.

"Yeah. I think so. I didn't Avenge the Fallen, but I think I'll do it next time",I said.

"I'm Alex", he said.

"Emma".

The bell rang, signaling that 6th period is over. "Wow", I said as I watched Alex leave. "So let's talk about this party".
