Three weeks of breast pumping around noon each day is getting tedious for Mona. Filling plastic bags with her milk, putting them in a temperature-controlled bag with ice packs, and hiding in her briefcase to take with her at the end of each day is trying. Not to mention finding a way to clean the pump afterward without being noticed.
Mona always locks her office door and pulls the shade when she does so, but one day, the milk almost spilling out of her, in her hurry, she did not lock her door. Halfway through, there is a knock at her door, and her personal assistant Mary Roberts enters catching her in the act.
Mona turns a deep shade of red. But Mary takes it all in as something natural and acceptable. She sits down and tells Mona to continue while they talk. Mary is so kind and understanding. Mary explains she had noticed Mona's breast getting larger in the last couple of months. While she is not sure why Mona is now lactating and does not expect Mona to explain, she would be happy to help in any way she can.
The emotions that arise when Mona pumps herself cause her to begin crying and telling Mary everything. She trusts this woman with her and Dolly's secret. Mary is in her late forties, widowed, with a grown son living out of state who Mary rarely sees. Mona knows Mary will not share anything she learns with others, so Mona is confident in telling her.
Mona begins by telling her the special side of her and Dolly's relationship. Mary does not bat an eye and actually tells her she has a cousin in a similar relationship, which comforts Mona. Knowing Mary does understand the underlying dynamics of the situation. Mary explains that it is a woman with her adult baby/husband, but the issues Mary is sure are the same.
Mona explains that she and Dolly had worked to get Mona to this level to be able to nurse her baby girl but now is faced with the repercussions of doing so when Mona is away all day.
Mary praises Mona on the solution found, and when Mona explains the trouble of transferring and cleaning the pump, Mary steps up with a very logical plan. After Mona pumps each day, she will give Mary the bag of milk and breast pump. Using Mona's car door pad number, Mary will put the milk in Mona's car and clean the pump and return it to Mona's hidden spot in a desk drawer, ready for the next day's session.
This way, Mona will not have to worry about transferring and cleaning and get back to concentrating on her work. Mona is so grateful she hugs Mary tightly before she leaves.
Mary does make one request. To which she tells Mona, she does not have to agree. Mary says that Dolly always did seem like a sweet young girl to her, and Mary would love to see Dolly as Mona's baby girl one evening. Mona would like for her to see Dolly as her little girl and is sure Dolly would enjoy seeing Mary again also.
Mona invites Mary to dinner one night the next week. Knowing Bee would fix a nice dinner for them, and hopefully, join them. Mona can see Bee and Mary would have much in common and would like the two women closest in her and Dolly's lives to meet.
