35: Distraction

I suddenly feel my body go tense. My muscles tighten and my breath vanishes for a moment. What does he mean by that? I swear if he thinks of me in that way I will-

"It's because I wanted something from you" Jungkook continues to speak, not glancing at me. Just ahead at the stars while leaning against his seat. Now I start to freak out a little not knowing what he's about to say...
"From the moment I knew the formal was coming, I knew that you were the one I had to go with. I knew from the very first second that I had to go with you. No one else. But I knew that after telling you why, you would refuse and maybe not talk to me anymore. So I had to get an excuse to convince you to come with me" He says calmly with not much expression but a sedimental tone.

What the hell is this little piece of-

"I just wanted to see you smile" Jungkook says and turns his head to gaze at me.

W-What.....I freeze in shock and confusion. I-I don't get it. What? When I stay silent and completely confused, Jungkook continues but this time he has his eyes directly on me. "I realised that ever since I met you....I don't remember seeing you smile. Genuinely. Happily. Just a normal smile. You're always glaring harshly or just have a straight face on. But..." Jungkook takes a deep breath, leaning his head on the side, still looking in my eyes. "I just wanted a simple smile from you" He says with such care in his voice.

I'm in shock. I just can't comprehend this. Why is his words so simply yet so complicated? My face is blank, lost for words. I don't even know how to react.

"So I said, I wanted to go with a friend instead of a date which is true though. But it's not the main reason..." Jungkook's face is totally expressionless while his eyes show all of his emotions. The sadness, hope and desperation.
So he lied to me to get me to come....

"And I got what I wanted tonight" Jungkook smiles gently to himself while staring at me so attentively. "You smiled...For the first time I properly saw you smile...You were happy. Your were genuinely smiling" Jungkook says looking deeply into to my eyes. I just can't steer away from his soft deer eyes which look sedimental.

"When I tripped over, you laughed.....so actually I got more than I wanted" Jungkook chuckles, rethinking what happened. "And then you danced with me. Not a couple way of course. Friendly, but you did it by choice. Not because you were forced. And you were smiling during that time" Jungkook finishes with the biggest and most gentle bunny smile ever.

I'm in awe. Completely. I never expected him to say this. I never expected him to even think of something remotely like not remembering me smiling before. Finally, I blink taking my eyes off him and look at the hands on my lap. I don't what to feel. Embarrassed? Regret? Bit of joy? I think I feel a mix of all. But I can't really tell.

"I..." I start to say with my voice shaky, not looking up. "I should prob-ably go now...Seoho will be waiting" Is the only thing that comes out of my mouth....

Jungkook nods. "Sure" he replies kindly. Even though he probably doesn't like the way I responded, he so nicely said sure. Which is weird because I thought he wouldn't like my reply but let me off for it without question. This guy makes me so goddamn confused. He...He's unlike anyone I've ever met.

I hesitantly open the car door and step out. Taking a deep breath, I make sure not to look back and force myself to walk forward away from the car. I can't turn around. Just don't turn around.

".......Minhee" I hear his voice call out, making me instantly freeze in my steps. I gulp but don't look back. Biting my lip, I hear footsteps. Then he's behind my ear, whispering....
