Thankfully this meeting was a fraction of the size of the last one. Unfortunately it was all Alphas. My head ached even with the pendant as we were all packed in a smaller room to be well heard.
I was seated at the Principal table between Kane and Chris, but didn't miss the looks that Dimitri kept giving me. I did spot a few familiar faces. Eric, Luda, Terry and even Malcom. I was also surprised to see a few female alphas in the crowd.
"What I want to know is why?" An unknown Alpha asked. "What made you so special?" He asked me, referring to the flayer kidnapping.
"Nothing," I replied with a shrug. "I have shitty luck and was in the wrong place at the wrong time. They wanted Derek, but as an Alpha's mate they thought I could be useful for something."
"Guardian Glass, Derek, is Chris's brother, he was just visiting the pack by chance when Jess got scooped up with him," Garrick chimed in. The crowd mumbled.
"And what did they go over while you were captive?" Another asked. I shuddered as the memories of the long week came back. Chris instantly wrapped an arm around me trying to comfort me.
"To be honest I did my best to tune it all out, I sat in the cell while they beat him. Nothing made any sense to me and they didn't ask anything of me," I replied skirting the questions.
"So they never touched you? It was just a week-long getaway?" He accused.
"I didn't get away scot free if that's what you mean," I grit out. "When they couldn't break Derek on his own they thought using me would work." I could feel Chris getting worked up. "They didn't get much of a chance as my pack showed up and cut them down."
"As any Alpha would do for his Luna," Luda said, cutting off any rebuttals.
The conversation went back to useless natterings to my ears. Chris gave me a squeeze and a smile, but it was really starting to wear on me. I don't think I could have sat through this without him.
The moment I dreaded came up as they started to discuss the battle I nearly lost Chris in. I have never felt so scared and helpless in my life as I did there.
When I saw Rob drive that silver dagger in Chris's back my heart stopped. Not only did I feel his agony through the bond but I was terrified to lose him.
"-you know what I think," Dimitri cuts in drawing me out of my reflection.
"This ought to be rich," Kane growled out.
"I think it's very convenient that long term allies suddenly betray, what reason? Rob was no fool, having Chris on his side was far safer then having him as an enemy." Dimitri was leading somewhere and I didn't like it.
"That's why he used the rogues, he couldn't come at me directly so he set us up," Chris grit out.
"Then your a fo-"
"Watch it," I snapped, cutting him off. Dig all you want at me but tread carefully elsewhere.
"There are easier ways to take over a pack," he snidely replies.
"I didn't want his pack," Chris snaps dumbfounded. "If I did, why is Malcolm Alpha."
"Good question," Silas mused.
"I assure you I am quite happy with my pack as is. Out of respect I offered it to my Beta, Gamma and Delta, all turned it down. I didn't want to strip it. Malcom reluctantly accepted the task to straighten it up, it's only fair that he get the title for his work." Chris's answer clearly satisfied most as several nods and grumbles of approval followed.
"It still sounds fishy that you would assassinate Rob-"
"Did you know a different guy? The Rob I met was an asshole and-"
