Chapter 6

The next morning, as I walked through the forest, I was in a very good mood. I was very excited to see the royal children and the queen. That's the chance of a lifetime, I thought.

I reached the gates and saw the same guards as yesterday. "Good morning!", I greeted them cheerfully. "May I come in, today?"

The guards looked at me, unamused. "Yes, come in," one of them finally said.

"Thank you, guards!", I said, grinning, and passed the gates, lightly bouncing on my steps.

I walked to the front door and faced two more guards. "Good morning!", I greeted them. They looked at me, but didn't respond. "I'm waiting for prince Gabriel to come here, for an interview with the Queen," I informed them, so they would stop looking at me warily. Their eyebrows raised as they looked at each other.

"You can wait in the lobby, miss," one of them said.

"Thanks," I replied, and carefully stepped past them into the huge palace.

I entered the lobby and looked around me in awe. There was beautiful furniture, most with complicated golden ornaments. On the walls were paintings of, I suppose, important people. There was a huge carpet, with colorful designs, and the delicate chairs were also standing along the wall.

I sat in one of the chairs and waited silently, looking at the paintings. A while after, I heard approaching footsteps. I stood up and Gaby greeted me as he entered the lobby. "Hello, Anna!" He walked up to me, and did a half-bow, probably confused about the appropriate way to greet me. I guess that made sense, since my status was potentially about to be elevated. "Hello, Gaby!", I said, and curtsied.

"I'm glad you came! My mother is waiting for you in the library," he informed me.

I smiled at him. "I'm really honored, Gaby. I didn't think I made such a good impression on you and your siblings."

"Well, you see, we often don't get to meet people that act as natural as you with us, especially someone of service. It's quite refreshing, I admit," he said absentmindedly.

Oh, I completely understand, I thought. But I said quietly, "Oh, I can imagine."

We talked some more as he accompanied me to the library. We halted in front of the door. "We're here!", he turned towards me, "Tell me how it went. Good luck!", he smiled and opened the door.

"Thanks again, Gaby," I said, before bracing myself and hesitantly entering the library. What would the queen be like?

I looked around the room. Rows and shelves filled with books stood on all the walls of the room. In the middle, several armchairs and sofas were arranged in half a circle. In front of them was a little table with a few delicacies, slices of cake and drinks.

In one of the sofas sat the queen quietly, reading a book. She lifted her head, hearing me enter and closed her book. I curtsied and kept my head bowed. "Your Highness," I greeted her.

"Hello, Anna. I've heard a lot about you," her melodic voice said. I wasn't sure what to say so I just nodded. "Come closer, and please take a seat."

I took a few steps and took a seat opposite from her, but still didn't meet her eyes. "Please look at me," she said. I lifted my head and met her electric blue eyes. She had brown curly hair, tied into a bun, with a few strands around her face. I could see now where her children had their features from. She was abnormally beautiful.
