Chapter 7

I entered the house and walked to the kitchen. I knew I had to tell Lisbeth about my departure. Telling an employer that I was quitting was always hard, especially in places where I was treated right, like here. I knew from experience that if I didn't tell Lisbeth right away, it would become more and more difficult.

When I stepped into the kitchen, Lisbeth said, "Ah, there you are, young lady. Grab an apron and chop the vegetables."

"Yes, ma'am. But I have some news first," I said, tying my apron around my waist.

"What is it?", Lisbeth asked, moving the soup with a spatula. "Don't tell me you're pregnant."

"...No, ma'am, I'm not pregnant."

"Then what?"

"I found a new place to work at. I am leaving tomorrow." There, I said it.

Lisbeth glanced at me in shock. "You're leaving? Why? Weren't you happy here? Weren't you treated right? Where did you find a better place than here??", she fired questions one after another.

"I met the royal children three days ago, and they offered me an interview with the queen. She said I could work at the palace starting tomorrow," I said, purposely leaving out the fact that I would work as a musician.

Lisbeth opened her mouth in shock. "You met the royal children?", she squeaked. "Are you friends with them or something?"

"Yes, I believe so. They said they wanted me to work at the palace, so I could see them more often," I explained.

"Oh my god! Just wait until I tell that to Mrs. Lawford!", she exclaimed. Ah, yes, Mrs. Lawford from the cheese shop. She was the best person to tell gossip to, I knew that she would spread the news to everyone.

"Congratulations Anna! Come visit us as soon as you can!", Lisbeth said.

"Of course! I'll come every once in a while to the village, so I still know what's going on around here," I said smiling.

"But be careful. If the whole Court knows you are friends with the royal children, they will want to befriend you, and some will take advantage of it," she warned me. That was another reason why I liked Lisbeth. She always paid attention to my well-being.

"Thank you, ma'am. I'll be careful," I said.

Next, I would have to tell the lady. I asked Lisbeth, "May I go tell the news to the lady?"

"Yes, go quickly. Then we can serve lunch in ten minutes."

I climbed the stairs, that I rarely stepped on and went to the lady's study. I knocked at the door and waited until I heard a gracious "Come in."

I rarely spoke to the lady, so I had no idea how she would take the news.

I opened the door and curtsied. She was reading a book, and glanced at me. "My lady, I have some news," I said. She raised a perfect eyebrow, "Yes?"

"I am leaving tomorrow. I found a new place to work at."

She raised both eyebrows. "Oh, I see. Where is this new place?"

"The royal palace," I answered.

Her delicate lips opened slightly, showing her surprise. "Oh, the royal palace. How did you get such an opportunity?"

"I met the royal children not long ago and they offered me an interview with the queen.", I explained. The lady stared at me for some time.

"Alright, but you are still working today. When is lunch ready?", she asked.
