"Wake up! Wake up, Ammah." Habiba calls me as I groan, waving my hand so she would stop.
"The head nurse will not appreciate you sleeping during your shift." She adds.
"Okay, I'm up then." I stand up, stretching. "Your patient is making a fuss."
I roll my eyes. "I am so tired of her, honestly. She is such a pain on the ass."
I take her file that was placed on the table. "Tell me about it, I'm not her nurse but she treats me like a slave. Did I go to school to serve you?"
Habiba says sitting down, pulling her veil down. "Now to put on a smile and worship her."
"Good luck."
I walk down the hall taking turns so I could go to miss shamsiyya's room, the queen.
I looked over her file because she her test came out for high blood pressure.
I came to a halt after I saw Jabir, my ex husband.
He was talking to some female doctors. Our eyes met, I looked away and walked passed him.
I and Jabir were the hospital love story. He was transferred to this hospital just when I started working here.
We met after I helped him in the operation room. We fell in love then got married.
My life was perfect, i didn't have to worry about leaving my husband at home alone, we worked at the same hospital.
Of course, it was all cherries and roses before I realised I couldn't get pregnant.
That was the big bummer, I had to take some weeks off to cry and get ahold of myself. Some 'me' time.
Jabir was bummed out more than I was and he was not so supportive.
Anyways, we continued normally until he started misbehaving. I knew it was about it so I thought we should like have a test tube baby or adopt but it seems he got tired of me.
Not being barren, no, tired of being with me. This was the same year I realized I was barren , mind you.
I had to take some weeks off too. I came back after some time and found him dating another nurse.
Guess our 'hospital love story' was just a fling.
Nah, I had to cry my eyes out in the closet for some hours.
I came out looking shitty as hell but tried to be normal.
"Miss shamsiyya, your test came out, I'm sorry but you have high blood pressure." I say politely.
She rolls her eyes and continued watching. "I need water." She breathes in placing her plate down.
She hisses. "What are you eating?" I take her plate, she was eating akara with pepper. It looked like the akara was fried with pepper.
"You're not supposed to be eating this. You have an ulcer." I take the plate away.
"Keh, bani plate ina (hey, give me my plate.)"
I step out of the room and threw it in janitor's trash then went back in.
"I will ask for someone to bring you a tray of what you're going to eat. Excuse me." I walk out.
"Uwarki! (Your mother!)" She screams from her bed. I went to the cafeteria.
"Nurse, take this to room 113. Be careful, she's a hot tempered woman."
The nurse nods before walking away. I sigh when I saw the beautifully glazed doughnut.
I walk to the cashier. "I'd like the vanilla glazed doughnut with chocolate chip toppings."
"I thought you were on a diet." Mercy says handing it to me. "I am, this is all apart of it." I slide her the money then turned to leave.
The fact the I'm going to eat this was exciting. I take a bite of it, unknowingly moaning lowly.
It is heaven. Hospital food sucks but this doughnut is an exception.
"I always loved when you moan." I heard Jabir's voice behind me.
I turn to look at him. "What? I miss you honestly." He shoves his hand in his scrubs pocket.
I hate Jabir more every time I see him here because he looks good in scrubs, he knows it.
I look at him then walked away like nobody was there.
Every step I took was torture because I wanted a comeback, to say something hurtful to him.
I meet habiba on the stairs. "Hey, you saw the new doughnuts. They look scrumptious."
"They are." I take a another bite while she takes a bite of her sandwich. I tore some for her.
"Taste it."
"Its delicious, I need the government to pay us so I could buy this at least once."
She shakes her head as I scoff. "Nigerian government, we'll die. Even though they don't pay and some people don't come to work, I do because I have nothing else to do."
We walk up the stairs. "Yeah, that's not me. I have kids..."
She stops for some time. 'You know, all of that."
I stop walking. "If you want to talk about you marriage or kids, say it. Let me be the judge of how I feel. Okay?"
She nods. "Come, head nurse shafa is arranging a meeting." One of the nurses says to us before running to the room.
We scurry off to our room, nurses' headquarters.
"There are new patients. Some are going to be house nurses this time." The whole room groans.
House nursing.....hell.
You stay in someone's house alone, awkward, bored. That is if they are kind.
"I know, but this is going to Ammah because she is one of the nurses with sympathy plus she neglected her present patient."
I try to intervene but she stopped me. "I will give you the address. You'll go tomorrow. The rest of you, its on the pin board."
She points to the wall then walks out of the room.
I follow her. "Head nurse, could you please change it? I will take care of my patient better even though she is unbearable."
Shafa sighs. "I can't even if I want to. You are one of our most sympathetic and patient nurses. We need that so please don't ask me again because this came from the top dogs."
She taps my shoulder then walks away.
I should've been ruthless.
