I had forgiven him, but the lingering fear of him repeating his past mistakes haunted me

I had forgiven him, but the lingering fear of him repeating his past mistakes haunted me. His words were sweet, but they needed to be backed by actions that proved he had truly changed and was willing to do whatever it took to win me back.

"Would you like to join us on a hiking trip with my family?" Leon asked, breaking the silence.

His family, especially his mother, was a source of concern for me. However, I was determined to show her that I was no longer the same person. I had grown and changed for the better, and I hoped she would see that and stop coming between me and Leon.

"I'd love to go with you all," I replied, trying to sound enthusiastic.

"Then start packing, and we'll leave early in the morning," he said with a warm smile.

I gathered my belongings, secretly excited about this new adventure. I had never been on a trip like this before, and I hoped it would be an opportunity for Leon and me to bond and rekindle our relationship.

The next morning, I woke up early, ready for the journey. As I descended the stairs with my things, I was surprised to see Leon's family already gathered.

"When did she decide to come?" Leon exclaimed.

"Because I decided she should, and I am the matriarch of this family. She's either coming along, or none of us are going," Leon's mother asserted.

At first, I was puzzled, not knowing who they were referring to, until Kenzie appeared from behind, clearly late.

"Sorry for the delay," she chimed in.

"It's supposed to be a family trip, mother. Kenzie isn't part of the family," Leon argued.

I silently pleaded with him not to let her come. She would only complicate things.

"Nonsense! She has been part of this family for far longer than Charlotte here. Charlotte, you don't mind her joining us, right? It's only temporary," Leon's mother turned to me, her smile a façade hiding her true intentions.

I did mind. I minded a lot. But I couldn't voice my objections.

I couldn't believe that I had hoped for peace during this trip. Kenzie's presence meant double trouble.

"I... I'm fine with it," I reluctantly replied.

"Great, let's get going then!" she exclaimed, clapping her hands.

We began our hike, slowly making our way up the trail. Soon, exhaustion set in, and my legs began to give out. Just as I was about to collapse, Leon came to my rescue.

"Feeling tired?" he asked with concern, lifting me into his arms, bridal style, and continuing the ascent.

"I'm exhausted too, Leon. Can you carry me?" Kenzie whined.

"We're almost there; no need," he replied.

"Put Charlotte down. I'm sure she wouldn't want you to tire yourself out," Leon's mother said, her words veiling her true intentions.

In reality, she wanted to make sure Leon didn't carry Kenzie, so she made him put me down as well.

I walked the rest of the way, our destination finally in sight. The view from the top was breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista of different werewolf packs.

We decided to take a break while Leon went to gather branches to start a small fire.

"You know, I used to come here every year with Leon before he met you. We always looked forward to this trip," Kenzie mentioned, trying to engage me in conversation.

I ignored her, choosing to focus on the awe-inspiring scenery. Mates were supposed to trust each other, and I had learned from past experiences not to believe everything I saw or heard, especially when it came to Kenzie.

She had a history of trying to sabotage our relationship with her deceitful words and actions. I knew better now; I wouldn't let her come between us again.

Suddenly, I felt a powerful push from behind, causing me to lose my balance. I desperately reached for something to hold onto as my body teetered on the edge of the cliff.

"You were never fit to be Luna. Leon deserves so much better than you. He loved me before you came along. Remember how you insulted me? It's time to pay for those words," Kenzie taunted with a sinister smile before bursting into laughter.

Does anyone think she's gonna die?
