My dad was really nice, don't get me wrong, but with all these strikes happening he's been awful stressed lately. I've tried to help him by making him tea (even though our maid could do that). Yet just today he learned there is another strike and he wants to go talk to Pulitzer about it. Since this strike is lead by no one other than the newsies. Honestly I think they get a bad wrap. People look down on them, but they are just doing the best that they can, and yet they're still starving!
I wanted to go check out the commotion, see if I can help in any way. Maybe with my title as the mayors daughter I could get some press behind it. I walked down the grimy streets of New York, specifically Manhattan. Father doesn't know I'm doing this so I hope I don't get in trouble. I had a carriage bring me about halfway since otherwise it would be a terribly long walk. I started to feel nervous as I heard what sounded to be a bunch of rowdy boys shouting and laughing. Maybe I should just head back? No, I came too far to stop. Yet what could I even do? Talk to their leader and let them know they have someone of slight power backing them up? Yeah I guess so.
My thoughts stopped as I stood in front of newsies square. Boys of all ages were goofing off and messing with each other. How would I know who the leader is? Maybe the two guys talking at the statue? I fiddled with my fingers and dress as ALL the boys noticed my presence and started to stare. Oh my, what have I gotten myself into? As I stood in front of the two boys whom I assume were the leaders they stopped talking and stared at me intently.
"What's a pretty goil like you'se doin here?" One asked with a thick accent, a red bandanna made him stick out.
"I wanted to talk to the leader of your strike mister," I responded as politely as possible. I mean school didn't teach me manners for no reason.
"At your service miss," He smirked/smiled grabbing my hand and kissing it. What a flirt, I couldn't help but blush anyways.
I took my hand out and coughed slightly, trying to rid of my nerves, "I just wanted you to know, if you need help with anything you can contact me."
"And whose are you?" He asked raising an eyebrow. Oh shoot they don't know me huh?
"Th-the mayors daughter," I mumbled looking down at my hands. I heard murmurs erupt when I said that making me feel self conscious. Oh jeeze I should never have done this.
"I think my friend over here could use some help!" A guy with curly hair shouted out laughing with his arm around another guy who wore an eye patch. Eye patch's eye widened and hit curly in the gut, not too hard tho. I didn't know what they were talking about and I felt even more embarrassed. It didn't help that eye patch was cute (more like hot but okay reader go off).
"Don't mind them knuckle heads," Cowboy frowned with a slight glare in their direction. "The names Kelly, Jack Kelly."
I nodded, " Van Wyck, (Y/n) Van Wyck, a pleasure to meet you." (I looked it up, that was the mayors last name at the time so oof.)
"We could use some help," The boy beside Jack said.
"Then tell me what I can do."
They figured I could only do so much, so I was to mainly attend any rallies or such if I was able to. Since I couldn't help much on the strike department I took it upon me to help with SOMETHING! So I payed for everyone's lunch that day, no matter how much they refused. They were all just talking to each other, about the strike or personal things. I sat off by myself eating quietly and staring out the window. The people passing by wearing either rags or riches. My thinking was cut short once again when someone sat in front of me. Oh its eye patch.
"Uhm, hello," I said awkwardly giving him a nervous smile.
He returned one back, "Sorry about my friend earlier, sometimes he doesn't know when he should keep his mouth shut."
I chuckled slightly, "It's alright."
"I'm Kid Blink, friends call me Blink," Kid Blink said with a beautiful smile. "But you can call me yours." He fucking w i n k e d. I think my heart melted-
"Nice to meet you Blink," I replied nervously, not sure how to respond to his flirting. His face fell for a second but he quickly gained his composure. I heard some of the boys laughing, again, probably teasing the poor bloke. I don't know how to flirt though so...
"I'd think the mayors daughter would be busy," Blink started. "What's you'se doin with a bunch of newises?"
"Well," I smiled. "I believe in your cause, plus I'd rather be here than being forced to learn etiquette for the millionth time."
He chuckled at what I said making my heart slightly flutter...wait that's not normal.
"How 'bout when we'se done here I could walk ya home?" He asked. This was starting to sound an awful lot like a date, eating together than walking home...well if you count all the other newsies eating around us maybe not but sTILL!
"It's quite far, plus I have a carriage waiting for me halfway," I said.
"I don't mind, I'll walk ya to your ride," Blink smiled.
I felt myself blush a bit but nodded in agreement, "okay."
Mush and Specs ended up joining us for the rest of lunch, which I could tell slightly annoyed Blink. Yet I found them to be fun to hang around. I could be myself while at home and in public I have to be this well mannered and polite girl.
"She was the prettiest goil I eva laid eyes on!" Mush exclaimed with a dreamy look.
"Yeah but was her rack nice?" Race asked leaning over the back of my booth.
"Race!" Blink scolded with a slight glare.
"No," I said with a smirk. "He's askin the real questions." Half the boys were laughing while the other half were in awe...Blink being apart of the latter. I started to laugh with the others, but I realized I should head back home in case my father finds out I'm gone. "Oh shoot, I should head out now, it was fun hanging with you all!"
They all groaned in protest, but Blink stood up with me. "Shall I escort you my dear lady?" He asked in a fake posh accent holding his elbow out to me.
"You shall good sir," I replied back linking our arms. The boys bid us farewell, some saying to use protection and others wishing Blink good luck. What boys smh. The walk was calm, silent and comfortable. We didn't say much, I would from time to time point out a cute dog and he would agree and we'd go back to silence. It wasn't awkward in the slightest. We approached the carriage to quickly for my liking.
"I guess this is goodbye," I smiled sadly. I hope we would be able to see each other again but I'm not to sure.
"Not goodbye," Blink also smiled. "Jus a see ya soon."
I felt my smile widen as I was very happy around him, "Well then, see ya soon Blink."
"See ya soon (y/n)," He replied. I leaned up and kissed his cheek before dashing into the carriage. I felt adrenaline pump through me as I looked out the window to see a blushy and smiley Blink with a giant smirk.
God what have I gotten myself into?
