Settling In

Elizabeth had Saturday nights off so when I woke up Sunday morning, she was cooking french toast for breakfast. French toast has always been my favorite food, ever since I was little. Ada was on the couch watching cartoons as per usual. I sat down with her. I don't care if I'm seventeen, I will always love cartoons.

As expected, breakfast was amazing. Afterwards, Elizabeth asked me to go down to the grocery store to pick up a few things. Ada wanted to come with me so we got dressed and made our way across town.

"Hey Marilyn!" I heard behind me as we went down the produce aisle. I looked behind me to see Sodapop. I smiled.

    "Hi Sodapop," I replied.

"Soda!" Ada yelled as she ran towards him. He picked her up and swung her around.

"I see you two have met," I laughed as he set her down. Ada took his hand and walked with him over to me.

"My brothers and I used to watch her when Elizabeth worked. Kids like me," Sodapop joked. "I'm glad I ran into you, I've been meaning to talk to you."

"Oh really?" I asked. I assumed it was about the other night with his brother. "Ada can you go find some eggs?" Ada nodded and ran off.

"Ponyboy told me everything that happened. I just wanted to say thank you. Darry can be hard on him but I swear he's never hit Ponyboy before and he won't ever again." Sodapop's face had fallen into a frown. He seemed disappointed.

"You don't have to explain yourselves, or thank me. How's he doing anyways?"

"He's good. Pony's a tough kid. He sure won't be picking up any more Soc girls though," he sighed.

I wanted to ask what the whole deal was with that. Johnny had talked about it but I still didn't really understand. The whole thing just seemed extremely petty.

A guy about Sodapop's age came around the corner holding a case of beer. "I have acquired the necessities," He said, throwing it in Sodapop's cart. "Woah I thought we were picking up groceries, not pretty ladies."

I smiled, blushing. Sodapop introduced me, "This is my friend Marilyn. She's new to town. Marilyn, this is my buddy Two-Bit."

"Nice to meet you," I greeted.

    "You too darlin'," Two-Bit replied.

Ada came running down the aisle with a carton of eggs and a gallon of chocolate milk.

"I thought I told you to get eggs," I said.

"I did!" She smiled as she held up the egg carton. "But I got this too." She held up the chocolate milk and looked at me with her puppy eyes. I tried to hold my ground but I couldn't.

"Okay. Put it in the cart," I sighed. I turned to Sodapop and Two-Bit. "I better get going before she sucks me in to buying the whole candy aisle too. I'll see you boys around."

As I was walking away I heard Two-Bit whisper, "Man I sure hope so." Ada looked up at me and giggled which made me laugh too.

Falling asleep that night, I know I should have been worried about school the next day, but all I could really think about was Sodapop and Two-Bit. If all the boys in this town were as dreamy and sweet as those two, I was in for a trip.

Getting ready in the morning was hard. I was extremely nervous and could barely eat my breakfast. I had never changed schools before. Even though most of the people I had met so far were nice, I was still worried. Elizabeth could sense I was nervous.
