Little Big Boy
Toby was the smallest boy
Of all the boys playing ball
When a game would start
He never got a call
They laughed and called him shrimp
Nobody wanted him on their team
He would never get to play
He could only dream
Always beside the field he would sit
Sighing and watching them play
Back and forth they'd run kicking the ball
Having fun and laughing all day
Now on that field lived a gopher named Ed
And he popped up beside Toby one day
Asking why he wasn't in the game
Toby told him he wasn't big enough they'd say
Ed snorted and said that's just silly
You don't have to be big to kick a ball
There's plenty they can't do
Because they aren't small
Why you can sit up on that skinny branch
You can crawl under that fence rail
None of them could do that
Ability is not a matter of scale
Toby smiled but said, It's no use
I never get picked not matter what I say
We'll see about that, Ed snorted again
You be here tomorrow when they come to play
Toby sat alone in the same old place
Watching the big boys have all the fun
Then the ball was kicked too hard
And they all began to run
The ball bounced and disappeared down a hole
The boys all stared, arms in the air
Ed popped up again and nudged Toby
Now's your chance, get over there
The ball went down that hole and now it's lost
Toby stood beside them looking down the hole
Guess you're happy now eh, Runt
No, said Toby but I know my role
In a flash Toby crawled down the hole
Ed grinned and handed him the ball
Now get up there big man
And show them who's tall
When he gave them the ball everything changed
And from that day on at every game
When choosing sides
They all yelled Toby's name
