"And the class clown thought he was being funny when he asked the soldier if he had time for relationships. But he told the class that they had an unspoken rule of 'Don't ask, don't tell ' " Peter was telling Tony about his day at school and how a soldier visited them.
"Hey, are you hungry?" Tony asked.
"I-"
"Too bad. You're hungry, case closed. Waddya say we go and eat out today? I'm craving some apple pie"
"But I thought you were practicing to cook?"
"I- Well- I've decided to put that off for a bit..."
"...is it because Captain America is living here now too and you don't want to have an encounter with him in the kitchen? And now you're gonna avoid him by eating outside?"
Tony glared at Peter. "Don't ask, don't tell, Pete" Tony stood up from where he's been sitting. "C'mon, let's go" he wrapped an arm around Peter's shoulders.
"Mr. Stark, it's been a week since you came back. You can't avoid them forever," Peter told him as they left Tony's workshop.
"Yes I can. And you're not one to tell me about avoiding when that's what you've been doing with MJ" Tony crossed his arms.
Peters eyes grew wide. "I- How did you know?" He whispered in shock.
"I have my ways" Tony shrugged. Just as they walked up the stairs and made it to the main room where the elevators were, they came across Steve. "Crap" Tony cursed under his breath.
"Oh no! What do we do! Mr. Stark-" Peter whispered in a panic.
"Hey, Queens" Steve greeted.
"C-Captain" Peter stammered.
"Tony..." Steve's voice was soft. Tony just plastered a fake smile on and nodded without a word. "Where are you guys headed to?"
"None of your business," Tony said a little coldly.
But Peter being Peter, he felt bad. "W-We're going out to get Apple pie," he said. But the air was still tense between Steve and Tony. "I heard you liked apple pie too, would you like to come?" Peter offered. Tony gave him a reprimanding ' You did not just do that ' look.
"Of course. Who's driving?" Steve asked.
"Me, obviously" Tony replied irritatedly. He trudged ahead with his arms crossed. Steve and Peter shrugged and followed after him.
The elevator ride down to the parking lot was awkward as hell too. Not for Steve though, he was just glad to be doing something with Tony again. Meanwhile Peter was trying to mentally prepare himself about how he was most likely gonna be the 'messenger' between these two. And Tony was going to combust at the thought of it all.
But in a minute or two, the dreaded elevator ride was over and they made it to the parking lot where Tony's casual car was parked. Although, Tony's idea of 'casual' isn't at all casual.
"Pete calls shotgun" Tony states before they reach the car.
"I do?" Peter asked confusedly.
"Yes. Yes, you do" Tony nods.
And then Peter understands. "Oh, no, I can't make Captain America sit in the back, I-" Peter refused, but Steve put a hand on his shoulder and told him it's ok. And judging by the look he gave Peter, he knew Tony was doing this to avoid him.
Peter did end up sitting at the front with Tony and Steve in the back. Tony played 'Without Me' by Eminem.
Soon enough they made it to the bakery. "Ah crap" Tony cursed seeing the amount of people sitting inside. He didn't want to deal with photos or paparazzi as soon as he came back.
