Ruby stared until the door closed in her face her she took a step back, the young waitress easing her down into a chair. "Ms. Ruby are you ok?" She asked, picking up a little hand fan and using it to fan ruby.
Ruby swallowed and nodded. "Yeah hun... I'm ok. Listen to me. You go on home to your mama and daddy. Don't tell them the devil came here. Ok?" She said as she grabbed her purse.
"B-but what about the rest of my shift?" The girl asked as ruby rummaged through her bag.
"Don't worry doll. Mama ruby's got ya. Here. Take this. Get a something sweet to eat from the bakery down the street and go home. Ok?" She said handing the girl a couple coins and the girls coat.
The girl nodded nervously before heading out the back door with a quick thank you.
Ruby watched the girl go and swallowed the lump in her throat. She wasn't sure if something bad was gonna happen but that girl had a family and she wasn't about to let that girl be caught in a fire storm if it happened.Ruby checked her make up and peaked put the door, seeing that buster had put the devil and the dice man in a booth right in front of the stage and ahe bit her lip hard. This was going to be a test of courage if there ever was one.
Just before she slipped away from the door the devil seemed to lock eyes with her and she gasped and jumped back away from his gaze. Courage? What was that?! She had none!
She leaned on her knees for a second before taking a few deep breaths, fixing herself again and heading up onto the stage with the microphone in her hand.
"Good evening folks. Welcome to busters Bustin Bar. Hope everyone is enjoying their food and drinks tonight!" She said, her voice warm and sultry, "it's come to my attention that we have a special guest with us here this evening, "she said gesturing a hand out to the booth right up front and she felt a bead of sweat drip down the side of her face as she saw the look the devil was giving her and she chuckled nervously, "our illustrious Don. The devil. On behalf of all of Inkwell and busters bar here I welcome you sir. Thank you for gracing our humble little tavern. I hope you and your crew enjoy the show." She took note of the different creatures that were all around the outside of the room, watching over the devil and the dice man.Ruby swallowed as she made her way over to the small grand piano on the stage. "My name ladies and gentlemen is Ruby for those who don't know. I hope my voice can bring you all a little entertainment this evening." She said as she began to play a gentle tune on the piano and soon sing along.
As the song came to a close she snuck a peak out of the corner of her eye at the devil and noticed that he looked like he was... in deep thought about something as he stared at her so intently she was sure he stared right into her soul.
She sang a few more songs as she normally would before standing from her piano and taking a bow, receiving a polite clap from everyone except the devil and his henchmen.
She swallowed. He didn't like it. Shit.
She kept her smiled plastered on her face as she took the microphone again and chuckled. "Thank you so much! I hope everyone had a good time. You were all fabulous tonight. I hope to see you all again soon." She said, "and Don Devil Sir, once again, thank you for coming to my little show." She winked and blew him a little kiss before she headed off the stage, his eyes, never once leaving her until the door shut.As soon as she was in the back room she fell into her chair and started shaking as she dug through her bag to find her cigarettes and when she found one she struggled to light it. That had been the single scariest thing ahe had ever done in her life! His eyes were so.... intense! She couldn't tell half the time if he was looking at her or through her and she could NOT read his emotions. His poker face was excellent. Perfect even.
A moment after her first puff on her cigarette buster bust into the door and rushed up to her, taking the cig and inhaling on it himself. "He wants to talk to you!." He told her as she glared at him.
Her eyes widened, "he what?"
"He wants you out there! Go!" Buster said, pulling her from the chair and rushing her towards the door. "Ok ok!" She said shoving him off, fixing her dress and a few stray hairs before taking a deep breath and stepping out.
And they were alone. Everyone had cleared out. It was just her the devil and his dice.
She swallowed again, trying to get her heart back into her chest where it belonged instead of her throat.
The devil sat with his knees crossed, leaned back against the seat and puffed on a cigar, once again, his eyes locked with hers, making her flinch and step back once before she shook it off and made her way over to his table.
"Good evening Mr. Don. I hope you enjoyed my show..." She said as the dice man rounded the table with a chair, bringing it up behind her and gently urging her to sit down.
She smiled politely at the dice, "Thank you sir." She whispered.
The dice raised an eyebrow. Why? Did no one ever thank him before? She turned her eyes back to the devil who still hadn't spoke and his eyes traveled up and down her form as she sat before him, her hands neatly laid in her lap, her ankles crossed and tucked beneath her and her head held high.
There was how ever a slight blush to her cheeks, a wideness to her eyes and a tremble to her shoulder that showed she would have much rather been anywhere but there in that moment.
He drew a long pull off his cigar and ashed it on the floor before blowing out a thick cloud of smoke around the group and he finally opened his mouth to speak.
"Ruby?" He said, his voice was gruff and almost had something of an echo to it. The only way to describe it would be to call it gently demonic.
She flinched, hearing her name come from such a voice, "yes s-sir?" She squeaked out, not proud of the way her voice sounded but proud she was able to speak at all.
"How would you like to live deliciously?" He asked, giving her a wide sharp toothed smile as his already piercing red eyes began to glow.
