Flying felt amazing, the cold crisp air like needles pleasantly stinging her skin as she zipped around, gliding between buildings and over the streets. Most of the city was quiet by this hour so it was very peaceful to just fly around.
But then that sickly sweet pink castle came into view and she swallowed hard. Her mother lived near there
She circled that area of the city for a while before she spotted the old candy stand that she and the other orphans would go to as children.
Sugar was a kind woman and was happy to give them treats where others called them urchins or vermin sugar would bring them behind the counter and sit them on the stool at her register to let them enjoy their sweets in the shade.
She remembered once thinking about asking sugar to adopt her but had chickened out at the last minute and simply asked for a sucker, which was happily given to her along with a gentle kiss on the forehead. A kiss from her mother.

She swooped down to stand in front of the closed up little shop and she placed her hand on the bars brought down over the glass to protect the front window. "Baroness's Sweet Shack" in big pink lettering was painted onto the front window. Sugar just managed the shop for the baroness of course but she also lived in the apartment above it. She remembered scraping her knee once and sugar took her up there to clean it and bandage it up for her.
She bit her lip. "You wouldn't have put me in the trash...would youve?" She whispered before moving to sit against the wall by the door and look up at the sky. She juat had to wait for morning.

Ruby felt a gentle hand grip her shoulder as she hugged her knees to her chest and rested her head on them. She must have fallen asleep at some point because she was a bit confused as to where she was for a split second but when she looked up with a start her eyes met none other than Ms. Sugar herself.
"Are you ok sweetie?" The woman asked and all ruby could do was look at her for the longest time, memorizing her face, the gentle curve and arches, how wrinkles had begin to set into her skin, laughlines and crows feet from years of smiling so kindly.
"Sweetie?" The woman asked again and ruby shook her head to clear it.
"I uh... I'm fine ma- uh ma'am." She stumbled as she stood up and rubbed her eyes. Been a while since she had slept on a side walk. Far less comfortable that she remembered.
Sugar smiled and clutched her broom. "Are you here for collections my dear?"
Ruby looked down at her, confused, "huh?"
"The protection fees?" Sugar elaborated.
Oh... ruby realized then what she must look like. Dressed like one of the devils goons, demonic features and all that. Sugar thought she was there to collect and she shook her head. "N-no ma'am I uh... I'm actually here to talk to you... if that's alright?"
The woman nodded and gestured for ruby to follow her inside, only just then looking away from ruby's eyes and ruby realized that sugar...was not afraid of her. Even thinking she was a goon for the devil she had stood her ground and made eye contact with her that whole time. Just like ruby did with the devil.
She turned to follow her into the fimiliar little candy shop and the little woman reached out to open the window to show that the shop was open for buisness. "Would you like a sweet? You're welcome to have one dear. On the house." Said sugar as she went to sit on the stool by the register and ruby wandered the little lanes of candy for a moment before stopping at her favorite one from her childhood. Sour balls.
She carefully took one and made a face after popping it into her mouth. So sour. She never understood how something meant to be candy could hurt so delitefully!
She turned to see sugar just smiling as she leaned against the wall and watched her. "Sour balls huh?"
Ruby nodded and tucked the hard little candy into the side of her mouth. "They.."
She was was cut off by sugar speaking again, "I remember child. You loved those things when you were young." She mused.
Ruby stared at her, a little shocked. "You remember me?" She whispered and sugar nodded.
"I remember most of the children who grace my shop more than once a year. You were always such a sweet little girl."ruby swallowed and came to stand a bit closer to her, leaning on a table near her.
"Now. You came here to talk about something? What is it?" Sugar asked with a gentle smile.
Ruby bit her lip and looked off, "do...do you have any children? Of your own I mean?" She asked after a long pause.
Sugar looked at her for moment before sighing and looking away. "I did once but... her father stole her from me..."
Her heart ached as she looked at the woman, her eyes stinging with tears.
"Why would he do that?" She asked, steadying her voice to sound unbothered.
"He was a...an angel." Sugar said and ruby's grip on the table behind her had to tighten to keep from falling over.
"He had fallen from gods graces and came to earth to wander. He made his way here... to inkwell city and... He met me." She explained with a sigh. "He was so... dark and dangerous looking. Especially with those blood colored eyes but... He was beautiful. His wings, from What He told me had changed from beautiful fluffy white to  dark and bat like... like yours." Sugar said looking back up at her and swallowing and ruby's heart felt like it would jump out of her chest. "We got married and life seemed great... but then I got pregnant and he became...different..."
"Different how?" Ruby coaxed.
"He had been so loving and gentle and warm before but when I told him he was gonna be a father he changed. He grew angry and cold and distant. He said we had to get rid of it. Had to destroy it...." She swallowed again and covered her mouth. "I refused. I told him I would never hurt our child."
"Then what did he do?"
"For a while he did nothing. Just sulked and stayed distant as I prepared for our baby... but the night before I went into labor he said I had to choose between the baby... and him. I chose the baby and he locked himself in his study until I went into labor..."
Ruby couldn't believe her ears. Her father sounded like a real peice of work.
"When I had the baby he burst in and... ripped the soul from the midwife and grabbed the baby. I was too weak to try and stop him and he took the baby and left... I've never seen him since."
Ruby bit her lip, "and your baby?"
Sugar looked up at her and moved off her stool to come stand in front of ruby, reaching up and placing a hand on her cheek. "You've grown into such a beautiful young lady..."
Ruby gasped and let the tears flow down her cheeks, "mama..." She whispered and sugar reached up to pull her daughter down into her arms.
