Your teacher gave your class some basic instructions before allowing you to choose your partners for once. Mattsun looked at you immediately with a big grin and you felt your heart flutter for a moment before an idea popped in your head.
Before he could make his way to you with his desk, you walked over to stop him and ask him something. "I actually want to work with...Furuya-san, was it? I want to thank her for yesterday. Can you point her out to me?"
He gave you a soft smile and pointed toward a girl sitting by herself in the front row, everyone around her having dragged their desks away to their friends. You thanked him and squeezed his hand before walking over, stopping to pat Makki on the shoulder. "He's all yours" you laughed.
"Is that how it is? You think I'm the kind of guy to just jump at a chance with someone who's now your sloppy seconds? Because the answer is yes, yes I am" he wiggled his eyebrows at you, making you laugh as he immediately got up and dragged his desk around to Mattsun's.
"Hey Daddy, how's it hangin'?" Makki kissed the air at the other boy as he sat down.
"A little higher now that you're here" Mattsun winked at him, making you roll your eyes and chuckle at the two.
You slowly approached the other girl and started to feel bad about how blatantly left out she looked surrounded by so many sets of partners that were giggling and working together. As you got closer, you looked her over--she had wavy light ash brown hair that hit just past her shoulders with a side bang and a set of red reading glasses.
"Hey, you're Furuya-san right?" you smiled as you brought your seat over to the other girl's desk, shocking her out of the focus she had on the work in front of her.
"Yes" she said lowly as she looked nervously down at her desk.
"Mind if I work with you?" you asked politely but she only nodded as a response. You sat down and scooted your seat up against her desk. The air between you was awkwardly quiet as you pulled out your own worksheet, so you decided to get straight to the point.
"About the other day..." you began, but she frantically cut you off.
"I'm really sorry if I overstepped in telling Matsukawa-san! I was just really worried about you, I know we're not friends or anything but..."
"Hey hey whoa! No worries, I was actually about to thank you" you chuckled lightly as you held up your hands in defensive reassurance.
"W-what?"
"Yeah, it means a lot that you were concerned about my well-being and I appreciate your honesty and vouching for me" you smiled. "In the end it kind of saved my ass a bit, so thank you for that."
The girl let out a shaky breath of relief. "A-anytime, I'm so glad you're not mad."
The two of you began to work on the classwork together and you smiled as you noticed her come out of her shell a little more with each thing you talked about. She really was quite a sweet girl and you were really thankful for what she did--you wanted to make it up to her in some way. As the class broke for lunch, you had an idea pop in your head.
"Hey Furuya-san, do you have any plans for lunch?" you asked as you started to collect your things.
"Not anything in particular..." she mumbled.
"Want to go to lunch with me?" you smiled.
"Really? Y-yeah, sure!" she beamed.
"Great, do you mind if we walk them to lunch practice before we go?" you asked as you pointed back towards the boys with your thumb.
