Rory sat gazing around the waiting room, full of pregnant women and glowing prospective parents. 'A room full of planners...man am I the odd one out,' Rory thought to herself. She kept her eyes down, hoping to keep any of the other girls from striking up a conversation where her she would have to answer any questions about herself.
"Rory!" A familiar voice broke up the daydream Rory was currently in about writing for Conde Nast. Rory put a good smile on her face.
"Paris, you look amazing," Rory replied standing and walking over to her friend's office. Paris opened her arms for a hug. Rory continued into her office and sat down on the plush leather couch in the back corner. Paris sat down on the coffee table across from her, so they sat face to face.
"This was a surpr---" Rory cut off Paris before she could even finish her thought.
"I'm pregnant." Rory stated curtly, not even wanting to look Paris in her eyes.
"I mean...that was definitely not what I thought this visit was for." Paris sat collecting her thoughts for moment. "How far along? Who is your primary care? What does Paul think? Better yet what does Lorelai think?" Paris folded her legs up allowing her to sit cross legged on the table.
Rory took a deep breath. "About 10 weeks I would guess. Was hoping you'd know someone. Paul is not involved and mom is surprisingly handling this better than I would have thought." Rory finally looked up to see Paris staring right at her.
"Rory, I have to assume now this is the work of Mr. Huntzberger- right?" Rory nodded. "Can't say I am completely surprised. Although I would have expected this a while ago....you know condoms usually work well right? Well, of course you know that. But we will get you squared away. What are friends for?"
Rory grabbed Paris' hand in hers. "Logan doesn't know yet." Paris pulled Rory to standing and into the adjoining room.
"Hop up." Paris pointed at the exam table.
"We don't have to do this now. This is not why I came here."
"Rory, you are broke and I will be damned if you get some second rate care. You may not have come here for this but I am going to help you."
Rory lay back on the table, cool gel being squirted on her bare stomach. She flinched. Paris looked startled by Rory's reaction. "Just a bit colder that I expected." Paris shrugged.
Paris moved the ultrasound wand over Rory's stomach and flipped on the TV screen next to the table. "There it is," Paris said triumphantly. Rory gasped at the sight of the little bean wiggling around the screen. "About 10 weeks 4 days....estimated due date of June 17. Everything look pretty good and normal right now. We will draw some blood...."Paris trailed off, so into her normal spiel that she forgot this wasn't a client but her best friend since high school. She glanced over a Rory, who was staring at the screen, tears running down her face.
"This isn't right," Rory said softly. She didn't need to say anything else Paris knew implicitly what she was talking about.
"Tell him. And tell him before he misses all this."
