Rory's eyes blinked open. Her attempt to move her arm was met with a harsh pull from the IV that was in her hand. Her mind raced, 'What the hell? What happened to put me in here?' Her eyes shot around the hospital suite. She could see Logan and what appeared to be Paris standing in the hall through the partially closed door. It looked like they were joined by another doctor and possibly Lorelai- Rory's field of vision was blocked by the remainder of the door.
"She was literally fine right before she went in the bathroom. Like totally..100 percent... breathtakingly... fine." Logan had his hands on the sides of his head. Rory had seen that frustrated look before, but usually it had to do with his family. "But, I should have known."
"As much as I wish I could say that is true. There is no way you could have Huntzberger. If anything I am surprised neither of her ultrasounds showed anything. I mean I guess I could have--" Paris was cut off by a deep, slow talking voice.
"So, I am Dr. Feltzweir. I was the admitting obstetrics physician when the ambulance brought Miss Gilmore in. I just wanted to update on you her condition."
Rory shook her head. "Condition?" she whispered to herself. This seemed like a dream to her. She had literally been in the hospital a handful of times before this- and only twice for herself and now she had a 'condition'.
"She has a condition called -"
Paris cut in, "Placenta previa- we know. I thought this was an update." Paris was nothing if not sure and steady in her directness, especially in serious conversations.
Logan grabbed on to Paris' arm in an attempt to allow Dr. Feltzweir to continue. Paris looked at him caringly but shook off his hand. Dr. Feltzweir must have been used to being interrupted, as he continued without much pause.
"Yes, Dr. Geller. So, the placenta previa is grade 4. It is the cause of Miss Gilmore's episode that she had last evening. She also had extremely low iron levels upon admission. She will likely be with us for another few nights and after that she will need to be monitored weekly and be on very strict bedrest until she delivers via cesarean section. We have also started her on an iron supplement that she will need to continue after she is released."
"So our baby is ok?" Logan asked, trepidation in his voice.
"His heartrate looks good. Fetal movement is good. Again, we will continue to monitor both Miss Gilmore and the baby on a weekly basis."
"That seems like a long way to go for a yes..." Logan commented under his breath.
"All I can say with certainty is they are both good right now. But you do need to understand the severity of her situation."
Rory could see Logan shake Dr. Feltzweir's and Paris' hands and thank them for their help. He stopped for a moment, to compose himself before he walked into Rory's room. Immediately he could see her eyes were opened. He jogged over to her bedside.
"Oh Ace," Logan said grabbing Rory's hands in his, and kissing her on the cheek. "You really gave us a scare."
Rory gave a half smile, "Waking up in here with no idea why, not great either. What happened? Last thing I remember was going to the bathroom at Max's..."
Logan, Rory's hands still in his, sat on the side of Rory's bed. He inhaled deeply. "So, you went the the bathroom. He was doing gymnastics on your bladder. Another lady walked into the bathroom like 5 minutes after you, and let out a piercing scream. We all just looked at each other and ran to the bathroom- we just knew something was wrong." Rory saw Logan close his eyes, she squeezed his hands and he opened them again. "Sorry, Ace. I just can't get that picture out of my head. You were just laying on the floor and there was blood and you weren't moving. I thought I lost you. I can't lose you again." Rory pulled him down to her and embraced him with the one hand that was not connected to an IV.
"I am sorry you had to see that." Rory said in a whisper choking back tears. "So, it didn't sound good from your hallway chats with the good doctor." Logan sat up, still gripping her hands in his own, tears filled the rims of his eyes.
"It could be worse, Ace. You will get a lot of time to write on the bedrest- so I am sure you will finish your book! And....we get to pick his birthday. And we will get to spend time together because I have told them I am working from my home office indefinitely." Logan looked down at Rory who was lovingly staring up at him.
"Thank you. I am sure you didn't think you were signing up for this hot mess express."
"Stop. Ace, I want all of this. All of you." He kissed her softly on her lips. She used her non IV arm to pull him in for a deeper kiss. She had thought she loved him during their time at Yale. But, truly she had not known the deep, heart aching love she does now. She loved Logan. And she truly could not imagine herself in a better place with him. He had grown up but more so grown into the man that she always knew she needed but didn't think she would have for her own.
"So my mom?" Rory said softly as Logan sat up, still not wanting to let go of her hand.
"She was here all night, I sent the Huntzberger helicopter for her, which she turned down until I told her that would be her only way to actually get into the city tonight. She went to go grab some non hospital food for when you woke up because she said what they had here was beneath Gilmore standards."
Rory chuckled. "Sounds like her. Likely looking for the greasiest, comfort food around. And the guys?"
"They followed behind the ambulance. They tried to be well behaved...but, the staff asked them to leave after hitting on all the nurses on this floor. I think Finn specifically asked one if she could kiss him because it may help you wake up by proxy. I think they are staying in the city, waiting to hear. They were worried too, Ace. I don't think I remember ever seeing Robert cry- ever." Rory took in the magnitude of what they all experienced last night at her behalf.
"I will call them later. Let them know I am truly ok."
Logan stood, his sleeves of his off white shirt that were pulled up over his elbows fell exposing red smears. Rory's finger traced over the spots along the cuff of his shirt. Rory could now see that Logan must have picked her up in his arms from where the blood was on his shirt. It was clear he had wanted to hide it and put it as far away from his mind as possible. He pushed his sleeves back up, neither feeling they needed to say anything about the marks on his shirt.
As serious of a situation they were still in, Rory wanted to try to pull his mind away from what she looked like laying on the bathroom floor at Max's to something happier.Logan picked up the phone in the room. "So, I will page the nurse and maybe she can adjust that IV so we can try to get you up a little bit. Dr. Feltzweir and Paris said it would be good for you and--"
She propped herself up on the hospital bed, nodding. "It would be good for me and Oliver," she said softly.
Logan spun around on his heels. "Oliver?"
Rory smiled. "I think Oliver Richard Huntzberger has a nice ring to it. And we can call him Ollie for short."
Logan embraced her. "It's perfect. Ollie. Ollie Huntzberger. That totally doesn't sound like a child that will get kicked out of boarding school." They laughed, knowing that it was highly unlikely with Huntzberger blood and uncles like Finn, Colin and Robert that their Ollie would not have some troublemaker streaks.
The smell of greasy, fried food filled the room. Rory did not even need to look up from the embrace. "Mom!"
"Kid, you definitely know how to worry someone." Lorelai slid onto the other side of the bed, across from Logan. She hugged Rory and kissed her cheek. "Luke wanted to come too, but I told him that he should wait and I would call him when I knew more. He has only texted every hour for updates."
Rory told her mom to call him and Logan went to update Honor, Finn, Robert and Colin. The night had been scary, with much to continue to process and plan for, but today their baby had a name and they were together. And for now that is all that mattered.
