Well, That Sucked

Rory and Logan finished eating the burgers he had ordered in. While he had been shocked that Odette had been so bold as to talk to Rory outside his building, he knew it meant she had closed the chapter that would have been their life together. Logan leaned his head back onto the couch.

"We're going to have to work on this. I mean, I know you're eating for two but I can NOT eat like this every night or I am going to look like I am eating for two." Rory playfully slapped Logan's arm.

"I ate like this before. Gilmore stomachs of steel." Rory giggled at herself. Carefree. For the first time in a long time she felt carefree. It didn't matter that she didn't know every detail of the next 5 years. Or where she was going to live. Or even where her underwear were. She was happy. She cuddled up next to Logan just taking in the moment.

They must have fallen asleep because they were awoken to a loud, swift pounding on the door. Rory sat straight up, nudging Logan awake. The pounding continued. Logan walked to the door, and looked out the peep hole. "Party's over, " he said quietly, as he turned back to Rory and opened the door.

Mitchum stormed in, like the troops storming Normandy. "What the actual hell Logan? I mean, what on God's green earth were you thinking? Obviously you weren't. Clearly you thought that this only would affect you. No thoughts to how it would affect the family. And you!" He turned to Rory who was now sitting on the edge of the chaise lounger with a blanket wrapped around her.

"I thought YOU were smarter than THIS, Rory. You could have handled this--"

Logan put himself between Mitchum and Rory. "Dad, Stop! Enough! This is NOT Rory's fault. This was my CHOICE. The right choice not that it matters to you."

Mitchum let out a patronizing laugh. "Right choice? No, Logan the right choice would have been to stand by your commitments to the family. To Odette. This wasn't just you in this deal. This was joining our families. Strengthening our families. Not that it matters to you. You honestly have not grown up since Yale. This was as much of a marriage as a business merger."

Rory couldn't get a word in edge wise, so she waited for a pause in the conversation. All the feelings of Mitchum belittling her career so many years ago came flooding back. Except this time, she had nothing to lose.

"Ah, right there. Now the whole truth comes out. You don't care until it affects YOUR bottom line. Well, I will tell you this right now..." Logan walked over to Rory, placing a hand on her shoulder. "We will be fine with or without you, or have you forgotten that I have built a name for MYSELF." Mitchum for the first time was quiet, just staring at the two of them angrily. Rory pushed herself up off the couch.

"Mr. Huntzberger, " she started, firmly.

Logan whispered, "You don't have to do this."

"No, I do." She continued, her eyes fixed on Mitchum. "You think you can run everyone's life. And you think you can pull all the strings and have people jump to your will. Guess what, this is a FAMILY not a business and it won't work. I was afraid of you once but not anymore. You will not scare me away. Do your worst to me and I will not falter. I am not running anymore. And I will be damned if you have any part of our child's life if you are like this."

Mitchum stood a little straighter, fixing his tie. He lowered his tone. "No one mentioned that. I only knew he left Odette for you. Somehow I will spin this to make it sound good. But, I will say this now." Mitchum turned towards the door. "Neither of you are ready for this. This is a mistake."

With those final words Mitchum was gone- for now. Logan stood, embracing Rory in a hug. All of her emotions, finally letting loose and the tears streamed down her face.  Rory pulled her face back, and through the tears she choked out, "Well, that sucked."

"Ace, you stood up to the beast. He did not know what to do. That was huge turn on." Logan smiled as Rory wiped the tears from her eyes. He kissed her and she leaned in, not wanting it to end. She ran her fingers through his hair. She had missed this. Finally, he pulled back. "Ok, Cinderella, off to bed. You and the baby bean need your rest." He grabbed Rory's hand and pulled her to the bed for a good nights rest. For tomorrow who knew what fires Mitchum would start....
