You Jump, I Jump

"I seriously can not believe he is gone," Shira said, shakily lighting the cigarette in her left hand. She walked out to the balcony. Honestly, she had not really left that spot since everyone had gathered at the Huntzberger estate. Her typically polished face had been stained with mascara and tear stains for their entire visit thus far. She only came into the house to refresh her martini and express her constant disbelief that Mitchum was actually gone. They all felt that way though. Everyone still fully expected Mitchum to walk through the door, displeased with the commute from the office or the current status of the election or what the staff had prepared for dinner.

Rory sat next to Logan, hand in hand on the very same couch where she was told she was not good enough to "marry the heir to the Huntzberger fortune". Who would have thought that the next time she would have been here she would be pregnant and Mitchum would be dead. It was still hard to wrap her mind around.

Honor and Josh sat across from them,  their two kids had already made their way into theatre room in the basement. The past two days had been a whirlwind. Phone calls, meetings with multiple lawyers, and funeral arrangements had filled their days. Through it all, the only time Rory saw Logan cry was when he first heard and spoke to Honor.

Rory thought back to that moment, and while it was only two days ago it almost felt like a lifetime. Logan turned to her in disbelief, shaking his head and was already talking through it with Honor before Rory even had a chance to respond. She just wrapped her arm around him and lay her head on shoulder. She felt the tear drops hit her cheek and knew this was hitting Logan harder than either of them expected. She heard him repeat 'heart attack at the office' before ending the call with Honor and getting on with the attorneys. Logan adjusting himself on the couch snapped Rory back to present time.

"Rory, it truly is so good you are here with us." Honor reached across the tea table and took Rory's hand in hers. "Truly."

"No where else for me to be." Rory squeezed Logan's leg and Honor's hand simultaneously letting them know how genuinely she wanted to be there for them. Logan squeezed Rory's knee back as his phone rang.

"Another lawyer. The Huntzberger estate one this time." Logan stood up and headed to the study to have the conversation.

Honor stood up and came over to sit by Rory. "Ok, please take my mind off of all of this. Tell me about the baby....you....anything..."

Rory nodded. "Well, baby is doing good. Still getting me sick all time which I hear is actually a good thing. And your gift, seriously was perfect. I am sorry I didn't mention it sooner...."

"Hush now, that is nonsense. We have all been a little preoccupied. I am just glad you got it. I saw it and couldn't stop myself. Every time I have talked to Logan -well before this happened- all he could talk about was how happy he is." Rory smiled. "I am really happy for you two. I was always pulling for you guys even when Odette was around. I knew that would never work. I mean for a business maybe but--" Honor stopped herself. "But YOU are here and that is all I -  and Logan if he was being truthful- wanted for him."

Rory could feel that she was blushing. "Thanks, honestly I was not sure for a while IF I should tell him and how it would all go but I am happy too. So happy." Logan came back into the room, and motioned for Rory to come with him. She stood and followed a somber Logan into the study. They sat down next to each other on the leather chaise in the corner. The whole study smelled like Mitchum, an odd combination of expensive aftershave, cigars and whiskey. It felt weird to be in it knowing that smell would go away without him around.

"So, I guess I am the new Mitchum." Logan spoke very matter of fact. "I am the next to take over this." He open his arms wide.

"Well, you knew that right? I mean Honor has no interest and that is why they didn't want us together before. You were next in line." Rory tried to reason with Logan about the current status of what was going on. He reluctantly nodded in agreement.

"I just never thought it would really happen. I mean I have a lot going on with just investment ventures. More than enough. And I won't give up time with you and I won't-" Rory put her finger on his lips.

"Slow down. Slow down. We have time to figure all of that out. Let's take this step by step. Beyond being in charge of the papers, what else did they say?" She put both hands on his knees.

Logan took a deep breath. "He left nothing for Shira. Like NOTHING. Like out on her ass."

Rory swallowed hard, confused. "Like NOTHING?"

"She is supposed to be out of the house. They lawyer says I can give her the Aspen house, if I choose to, but beyond that the instructions are NOTHING. Not a penny. Not a piece of China. Nothing. Freaking Mitchum being Mitchum even in death." Logan was frustrated now. "I mean my mother is no angel and they were not in a good spot, but they can't even let us bury him before this all is hashed out."

"I mean she likes Aspen. She has told me that so, maybe that will be good for her. And obviously you won't let her starve."

Logan agreed. "The lawyers are coming today to discuss his will with everyone but wanted to give me a heads up. Ace, you don't have to stay for this. It could get ugly. And knowing Shira it probably will." He was looking straight into her eyes now.

Rory put her arms around Logan's neck, pulling him close. She whispered into his ear, "You jump, I jump, Jack."

He kissed her and for that moment, it was just them and all was right in their world. The chaos of dealing with Mitchum's death and the fallout from it could wait for a few minutes.
