You Can Still Keep Your Man Card

Rory's small compact car pulled up the rocky driveway that led to the home she had lived in for the better part of her life.  She couldn't even make it up the steps, before Lorelai and Lane greeted her in the front yard.

"You two look awfully suspicious," Rory said, glancing at them through narrow eyes.

"You got us....We couldn't wait to give you a little 'yay it's a boy' party, " Lorelai said, putting her arm around Rory and pulling her up the stairs. Lane put her arm around the other side of Rory and they stopped as soon as they entered the door.

The living room was covered in blue cray paper, blue tinsel, a blue 'IT'S A BOY' banner, and blue balloons. Miss Patty and Babette sat on the couch and waved to Rory as soon as she walked in. Sookie and Martha were meticulously organizing what appeared to be a table of gift bags.  Even Emily Gilmore was sitting on the chaise lounger sipping tea. Rory gazed around every corner of the room, and her mouth must have fallen open.

"It kind of takes your breath away, huh? Like Smurf exploded right in the center of your mom's living room," Lane said with a chuckle. Rory nodded, mouth still part way open.  It was SO much blue.

"I didn't show you the best part," Lorelai excitedly shared. Grabbing Rory's hand she pulled her to the folding table covered in a blue table cloth that was placed in front of the window in the front of the room. Lorelai stood back almost presenting the table to Rory as if she was Vanna White. It was covered in Rory's favorite snacks- but they were all blue. Blue Pop-Tarts, blue cupcakes, blue twizzlers, blue gumballs....you name it Lorelai had found it

"You really outdid yourself, mom." Rory grabbed a twizzler and took a bite off the end. "Like how did you find so much BLUE." She giggled.

"It's a wonder what Taylor can do on a tight timeline. Taylor had this all ordered for me, one set in pink and one in blue and I just had to pull the trigger. Easy peazy...and then obviously Taylor told almost everyone in Stars Hollow so...whala everyone wanted to at least drop by a gift." She pointed to the gift table that Sookie and Martha had organized.  Rory wrapped her arms around her mom.

"Thank you. Just thank you. For all of this...especially all of the blue. It is so not over the top at all. Very subtle." Rory giggled and excused herself to go greet everyone.

The party was short and still so exhausting for Rory. She talked to everyone for quite a while. In true Stars Hollow fashion, all the mothers in the room shared their birth stories, which was probably more scarring for Rory than helpful. Even Emily shared hers, which was met with groans and cringes from Lorelai throughout the entirety of it. Miss Patty and Babette could not stop gushing about how 'absolutely gorgeous' this baby boy would be. After everyone had cleared out, Rory and Lorelai sat next to each other on the couch, heads resting on the top, both staring up at the ceiling.

It was silent for a long while, especially for Gilmore standards, before Rory popped her head up. "Grandma used the word crowning... I think that is enough to give me nightmares for the next... I don't know ....10 years of my life."

Lorelai laughed. "That's Emily for you, sufficiently giving sleepless nights since 1973 . What about Miss Babette talking about 'bedding' Morey for the first time. I seriously shudder at that word..Bedding...bedding.." Lorelai cringed at herself saying it again. "It's like mucus or moist. There are so many less gag-inducing words to use."

Luke walked into the living room just as Lorelai said the word 'moist'.  "I feel like I should not be here right now. Too much lady talk for me."

"You can still keep your man card, Marlboro Man, " Lorelai said, tapping the couch next to her and Rory. Luke walked over and sat down next to Lorelai.

"Looks like you got a ton of baby stuff." Luke said glancing at the gifts surrounding Rory on the floor.

Rory smiled, "They were all very generous."

"There is one more that you haven't opened yet." Luke motioned with his head towards the kitchen. "In your room."

Rory looked at Lorelai. She looked as surprised as Rory. Luke was not often the gift giving or super sentimental type. Rory stood and walked to her room, Luke and Lorelai only a few steps behind her.

On top of her bed, she found a large cardboard box, unwrapped. The box was simply closed with a piece of packing tape. Rory peeled back the tape and the box almost opened on its own.  Rory gasped as she opened it. She picked it up out of the box and set it on the bed. She ran he fingers over the smooth edges. "This is perfect Luke." She turned around and threw her arms around his neck.

"I worked on the bassinet, after your mom went to bed. I know its not much...."

"Stop that. This. This is the best gift I could have asked for Luke."

He smiled. It truly was special, made with Luke's two hands. The wood was stained a light blue color and Rory could picture she and Logan's baby boy cooing away in there while she type the remaining chapters on her book.

Lorelai wrapped her arm around Luke. "You are a man of man talents, Mr. Danes. One of the reasons I love you..more so because of your butt but, your handyman skills are sexy too." She laughed and kissed him, and as she pulled away she felt something in his back pocket. She pulled it out and held it up for him to see.

"OH I almost forgot Rory. I know its not really your style. Or Logan's. But I got this for the little guy."

Rory took it from his hands and smiled again. "It will match his Papa Luke's." She placed the little navy blue baseball hat in the bassinet. She turned and hugged her mom and Luke. "What would I do without you two?"

"Lucky for you kid, you are stuck with this dynamic duo," Lorelai said, embracing her husband and Rory back.
