The grey and white walls surrounded Cass, Charlotte and I as we read our favorite books. People around us laughed and chatted with their friends. Charlotte leaned her head on my shoulder, drawing a flowers over a cream colored page. I looked down at her and smiled at the girl I babysat for. Growing up, Charlotte's parents were great friends with ours. Charlotte grew to be like another sister. The slight hum of music filled the air as a group of kids played the tunes on an old radio. There was a slight hint of vanilla and cinnamon in the air. I smiled, thinking of when my father and I would bake cookies for the holidays. I flipped the cream colored page of The Secret Garden. I grinned at the memory of my father reading the book to Clarke and I before we went off to bed. After my father was floated and Clarke was arrested, I read the book to remind myself that their are good times coming.
I looked up and saw two kids playing with their mother. They giggled as the mother tickled them. I glanced at Cass and saw her staring at them with a solemn expression. Cass' mother was struggling from a rare illness that was taking many older people's lives on The Ark. The council was doing absolutely nothing to help the increasing death rate. My mother was not allowed to tell me anything, but I had my ways.
I was helping Cass steal medicine to hopefully improve her mother's health. I had successfully taken some medicine that had improved Ms. Orion's chest and back pain, but unfortunately she was still struggling to breath. I was risking my life to help someone's else, but it's going to be worth it.
I noticed that Cass was still staring at the family. Charlotte nudged her shoulder, giving her a sympathetic smile. "It'll be alright," Charlotte said, "Your mother will get better." Cass nodded and looked down at her book, but we could still tell she couldn't shake the feeling away.
"Roxie, I know you've lost the will to fight, but you need to know that I've got this," I put a hand on her shoulder, "We've got this! If we can save your mothers life, then that means we can save others." She smiled at me then looked ahead. "I'm just afraid that you'll get arrested," Cass said, "What if you go to Earth, with the others. You turn 16 in a week. "
"Then I can communicate with you from down there," I said, "I'm great with technology. I'm sure I'd be able to whip something up." She sighed, clutching the book she was reading. "Aren't you forgetting that you have to be 18?" Charlotte joined in and set a hand on top of my best friends. "I am not going to get arrested, and I'm certainly not going to Earth. Not for awhile," I said. If I've been doing this for over two months, I'm sure I can do this for another year. Cass nodded and flipped the page in her book. Charlotte looked down at the paper and grabbed another pencil. I smiled to myself, still listening to the music.
The sound of the double doors interrupted our reading session. Kane along with two other guards barged into the cafeteria. The two uniformed men behind him held large guns that were roughly the length as my arm. Cass and Charlotte glanced at me with a worried look. "It'll be alright," I said, "It's probably just another temperature check." They shook their heads as Kane the other men walked over. Their tall figures towered over Cass, Charlotte and I.
Charlotte laid a hand on top of mine as the men stared at me. "Is everything alright?" I asked, getting up from the cold tile floor. Cass and Charlotte stood up as well, Cass put a hand on my arm. "I don't think it's a temperature check," she muttered so only I could hear. I glanced at her then looked at Kane. "Y/N Lara Griffin, you're under arrest for stealing the medicine supplies for Mary Orion's illness," Kane informed, resting his hands behind himself. I glanced at the men behind him and recognized one of them as Bellamy Blake. He had never spoken to me, we had taken a few classes together last year. "I'm not sure what you mean," I said and cleared my throat. Kane sighed and motioned Bellamy to grab my wrist.
