“You look troubled.” I said as I walked into the bus later that day and found James sitting in a dark corner staring thoughtfully at nothing. He looked up and acknowledged me but said nothing. Thats when I got a glimpse at the bruises on him. He had what was left of an almost healed black eye, a partially healed busted lip, and still very pronounced bruises all over. I gasped and walked over to him, taking up his chin and inspecting his face closer. “Damn, someone got you good.” I whispered touching his cheek lightly. I went to the freezer and retrieved an ice pack and wrapped it in a towel then handed it to him but he wouldn’t take it. I sighed, sitting on the edge of the couch next to him and pressing it lightly to his face. “Wanna talk about it?” He shook his head. “Alright, I know vampires heal quick but it would feel much better if you would just hold the ice pack on it.”

“Yeah well when they make a full body ice pack, let me know.” He mumbled in a tired, husky voice. He sighed, “It was a group.” He said, finally giving in after a minute and explaining. “I don’t know how many there were but for once it was a fight I couldn’t win... Its a strange feeling.. I’ve never lost before..” He said staring off. I smiled slightly and he looked up at me funny.

“You cant win everything, and honestly I’m glad you got beaten up, it will humble you, but the good thing is everyone heals. In a few more hours you’ll probably be in the clear to go out and strike fear into the hearts of others once again, so don’t sit here a mope, get over it, you lost a fight but you still have your life and one fight doesn’t mean anything.” I said gently. He watched my lips cautiously as I talked as if he was hanging onto every word. Then he nodded,

“I know what you mean but I shouldn’t have my life, those guys wanted to kill me.” He said softly, I pulled back and looked him over for a moment cocking my head.

“Well if their goal was to kill you then you didn’t loss the fight after all.”

“Yeah but I almost did, I would have been killed if your boyfriend hadn't stepped in.” I jumped a little in shock and looked at him dumbfounded.

“Why would Daniel help you? You hate each other.”

“Thats what I was wondering myself, he didn’t say anything either.. just helped and walked off.” James said, sitting up, throwing his feat over the side and putting his head in his hands. You could tell he had a lot weighing on his mind when he was like this. “Thank you.” He said after a moment, making me look up. He handed the ice pack back to me and began to walk to his bunk.

“Do you want me to talk to Daniel?” I called after him.

“I couldn’t care less.” He replied, pulling himself into his bunk and shutting the curtain. I continued to sit on the floor for a while after trying to collect my thoughts. Why would Daniel have a sudden change of heart and help James? The Daniel I knew would just pull up a chair and watch with a bowl of pop corn he hated James so much. I sighed, leaning into the couch for support and I covered my forehead with my hand feeling faint. I thought this life was finally panning out for the better and now all of a sudden everyone has changed, everyone has a plan in motion that I cant figure out.

Suddenly James climbed down from his bunk again and moved swiftly to the fridge. He shifted through it then growled when he couldn’t find what he wanted.

“Whats wrong?” I asked gently, still laying next to the couch. He didn’t answer, in fact it was like he was purposefully trying to ignore the fact I was there as he shifted through cabinets. I sat up, watching him curiously. He still couldn’t find what he wanted and grabbed the counter hard, beginning to breath heavy. “James?” I asked, he turned and faced me but quickly turned away again heading for the door.
