A/N: just an fyi, there's a Dawson's Creek quote throughout this chapter 😉
~•~
You slip your hands inside your coat's pockets, the cold air hitting your face the second you step out of the gym. It's been a long day and now you're finally going home to the two most important people in your life.
Every once in a while, the fact that this was now your life would hit you and you'd have to wait a few seconds to let it sink in. This is one of those moments.
As you walk home, you think about how lucky you got. Who would've thought that after everything life's put you through, you and Bucky would be able to start a family just like you dreamed about back in the forties, even if it had taken over eighty years to make it happen. You grab your keys and open the front door before stepping inside and hanging up your coat. You let your hair down as you walk towards the living room and groan as you massage your scalp a little bit, it's an incredibly soothing sensation after having worn a tight ponytail all day.
The closer you get to the living room, the louder those two familiar voices get, and as you're about to enter the room, you hear your name, causing you stop dead in your tracks to listen.
"Is Mommy your girlfriend?" you hear Diana ask, making you chuckle under your breath.
You hear Bucky chuckle too. "Well, technically she's my girlfriend. You see, we were supposed to get married a long time ago, but she wants to wait a little longer."
"Do you want to keep waiting?" Diana asks.
Bucky sighs and pauses, and you can tell he's thinking about his answer. "We'll get married whenever she's ready." You know he avoided the truth.
"What would she be then?"
"She'd become my wife, and I her husband. But I like to think we're more than that," Bucky says.
"More than that?"
"Soulmates," Bucky says and a smile involuntarily appears on your face.
"What's a soulmate?" your daughter asks.
"It's a... Well, it's like a best friend but more. It's the one person in the world who knows you better than anyone else," Bucky explains. "It's someone who makes you a better person. Actually, they don't make you a better person, you do that yourself, because they inspire you. A soulmate is someone who you carry with you forever. It's the one person who knew you and accepted you... believed in you before anyone else did, or when no one else would. And no matter what happens you will always love them. Nothing can ever change that." You feel your heart glow at Bucky's words. "Now, come on, it's past your bed time."
You enter the room before Bucky stands up. "I'll tuck her in," you say, flashing Bucky a knowing smile.
"Mommy!" Diana exclaims excitedly before running up to hug you. You pick her up and hug her tightly.
"Hi, sweetie!" you say before beginning to walk up the stairs towards her bedroom. "How was your day?"
"Daddy taught me how to use a lightsaber!"
You exaggerate a gasp and turn on the lights of her room before looking at her. "No way!"
"Yes, and now I'm better than him," the little girl says proudly and you chuckle as you begin to tuck her in.
"Oh, I'm sure you are," you say, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "You'll have to show me tomorrow so I can see how good you are."
"You're staying at home tomorrow?" she asks.
