Through the open window the flower in the vase sway gently from the breeze, the steady beeping of the heart monitor is the only source of noise that's held in the white room.
Lance is settled in a chair close to the hospital bed where Keith lays, needles with fluids cover his arms along with bandages. His body lays motionless save for the rise and fall of his chest, the only indication he's still alive with his pale almost dead like skin and closed eyes that keep his violet irises from seeing the night sky he always admired.
Lance intertwines their fingers together, careful with the IV's that helped progress Keith's health.
He stares at their hands, warm against cool, firm against limp, he sighs laying their hands down on the bed. He stands up and sits on the bed, making small circular movements on Keith's hand and moves a piece of hair from his face. He goes back to sitting on the couch, continuing his movement.
"You aren't gonna die, despite what the doctors and staff said about the chance of survival I know you won't give up. You never did before so why would you know? You aren't a quitter and are always up for a challenge so I'm going to need you to face this one and continue fighting for me, for the team ok? Shiro might grow more white hair from the stress, Hunk's stress baking, Allura's worried sick and Coran, don't make them and Pidge lose another family member. I don't think they can handle another loss." Lance whispered, "and I don't think my heart can handle that much damage."
The gentle breeze enters through the open window, making pieces of Keith's hair dance with the wind. Lance watched, a gentle look on his face, "you were always like a diamond to me, tough to break or enter and a spectacle for soar eyes. When you showed up in class I was sure you would gain the attention of everyone, and I was right, you attracted everyone. I was jealous at first since you basically took all the ladies from me and quite a few hot men, and I noticed how you rejected everyone. I said to myself 'I bet he just thinks he's better than everyone else, he just wants to break their hearts.' I'll admit I was a bit of an idiot back then, maybe I was just trying to reject the feeling that overwhelmed me every time I saw you." He chuckled squeezing his hand a bit, "no, I'm sure that's the case. When Shiro introduced you to team Voltron I wanted to scream at him, 'how dare he bring in such a cute and equally hot man to the team?!' It was then I noticed how you would distance yourself from everyone else no matter how much they tried to bond with you, and that only fueled my negative thoughts on you. It wasn't until we hand a sleep over at Pidge's house and you ran away and I found you in the alleyway did I find the reason you were so distant. You were just trying to protect your fragile heart, your fear of abandonment and trouble of interacting with everyone else kept you from forming any sort of connection with anyone else besides Shiro."
"God I've never seen you cry before," lance frowns, "and I don't think I ever want to see you cry again. You looked so beautiful when you cry but it was also heartbreaking to watch you shatter in front of me. From then on I promised I would do whatever it takes to keep you from crying, we all grew closer together as a team after I brought you back and you finally opened up." He smiles, looking up at Keith, "you and I got much closer though, and before you know it I asked you out on a date, I thought you might reject me but instead you said yes. Keith fûcking Kogane said yes to me, Lance McLain. You have no idea how happy I was that day. I was even happier when you said yes to being my boyfriend. It was almost like today, the night sky over our heads with the moon as our only source of light. Remember, we were walking near the shore, one hand holding each other, the other holding our shoes. You asked if this made up boyfriends, I was so anxious when you asked that I didn't know what to say, yes, no, maybe? I said 'if you want to.' And you said yeah, you wouldn't be able to believe how happy I was about that, even though I kissed you after that and spun you around it still couldn't correlate with my emotions. When we arrived back at the dorms you complained about the sand in your feet but that didn't stop the smile on your face from growing any less." He said, tears now misting his eyes as he did his best to hold them back.
"Let me see that smile again, wake up and show me that smile that always managed to make my heart beat faster than usual. Show me those beautiful indigo eyes that I fell in love with, the strong stubborn person who won't give up on a challenge even if it is stupid, the one who would do anything to help others even if it meant hurting yourself in the process." He begged.
"I just want you back."
He whispered, held back tears now flowing down his face, holding Keith's hand in his own, just wanting any sign of him waking up but none came.
He cried himself to sleep that night.
Sunlight poured through the open curtains, soft winds blowing in through the open window.
Lance didn't exactly open his eyes when he woke up, the soft breeze felt nice against his hair and the sunlight felt nice against the cold hospital room.
It was a few seconds into the euphoria did he realize that wind can't rack through someone's hair. His head sprung up from the mattress, the person's hair retracting back from the sudden movement.
"Good morning sleeping beauty."
Lance stared wide eyed, Keith was awake, eyes only half lidded but full of life, and his smile. God Lance never knew he would be this happy to see that smile again.
He sprang up and hugged him, Keith hugging back but gently told him about his injuries and he immediately backed off but still hugged him. Lance took one good like at him before smashing his lips on Keith's. He gave out a startled muffled yelp before kissing back.
"Good to have you back babe." Lance whispered, parting from the kiss and let his head fall in the crock of his neck. "Good to be back." Keith gently said into his hair.
