Silence

Silence. It was all you could hear. That, and Nathaniel's words looming over us. Although deafening, I didn't attempt to break it. It was a miracle that he was even choosing to speak to me about it. Which, I was guessing was taking a great deal for him to do so considering how far the silence had and was still stretching.

I was going to wait. I wasn't going to question him. I was just going to wait and be there. I wasn't in a hurry anyway.

He still laid supine on the bed with the insides of his elbow covering his eyes. His fingers twitched in mine. I held on to them, tightening and rubbing soothingly. I laid on my side and watched him.

"He got diagnosed with brain cancer at seven which was a year ago." He continued in that low tone again. My heart broke. When he mentioned his cousin, I didn't think he was talking about someone so young.

"It was in the early stages when he was diagnosed and they were able to treat it through surgery. Everything was okay he..." he paused. I squeezed his fingers again, the slight tremble to his voice a foreigner that got me shaking with a need to comfort him. Bear some, if not all of his distress. Move closer.

I agree with the moving closer.

Now's not the time you lascivious sinner!

"Two months later it came back strong and vicious, spreading rapidly. Mercilessly stripping an innocent soul of their childhood." He sounded bitter. Bitter and sad. The latter, he tried concealing.

"I'm sorry Nathaniel." I mumbled. There was so much I wanted to say to him yet so little I could think of. Words escaped me. Emotions, as overwhelming as they could be, took charge of my body leaving me with not an option but a demand to slide closer.

And closer, I slid.

He sensed my movement and unwound his arm from his face. He turned his head to face me and watched me. I still clutched his hand, twisting his fingers when my lascivious friend started screaming at me.

Closer! Move closer!

I looked into his eyes. I swear I would've ignored the voice had I not. Grey orbs were beckoning me over. I succumbed. I did because I didn't know what restraint was at that second.

So I slid closer. Then even more closer. Closer I slid until I was in his face and looking up at him. He returned the look for a few good seconds. Then he was looking away at the ceiling after those seconds, withdrawn into his cold unfeeling self because it was easier that way.

"Yeah, well. Life happens." It took me a moment to realize he was responding to my comfort.

Touch him!

Again came the voice. This time around I didn't have Nathaniel's eyes to use as an excuse when I complied. Cupping his right cheek, I ran my thumb over the skin and his body shook infinitesimally, once. His head was turning to face me again when I started.
