There comes a point in your life when you start to notice subtleties of the people around you. I know that people from outside of my social circle wrote me off as quiet and brooding. The reasoning is I prefer to not bring attention to myself and be the voice of reason. My friends can be quite chaotic and I learned this is in our first year together. Now that we have reached our third year of university and we have been given the responsibility to help guide and grow the freshmen into upright university students. I have realized how much my sense of humbleness and maturity is needed. These guys need a voice of reason.

On our very first day of hazing the freshmen. Everything escalated way beyond my expectations. I stood by and watched. Ai'Arthit as the head hazer began his speech and trying to get the freshman to understand the importance of knowing everyone and respecting us as seniors, but the moment he called out on one freshman it went downhill. The freshmen stood up from his spot and stated his name
"Kongpop Sutthiluck... Code 0062"
Ai'Arthit asked him "how many students are in the engineering faculty"
Obviously this was a trick question. Why would anybody know this, but that was not the point of this question. We wanted the freshman to understand the importance of answering questions when ask by a senior.
The student responded to the question as we had predicted, so Ai'Arthit continued his speech to the freshmen.
Sometime when I had not noticed Ai'Arthit started to direct another question to the student who couldn't answer the question the first time.
"You see this gear"
"See it."
"This gear is a gear representing the pride of all engineers. Not just one person. If you did not show me that you're not ready to take it, then get out of here! I assume you are not my Nongs anymore!"
I understood why he said the last part. As a first year student the goal is always to get the gear otherwise you would be humiliated by your peers. What I did not understand was why did Ai'Arthit have to continue staring down this one freshman. Just than I  witnessed Ai'Arthit's face change. I knew he had something in mind, so I moved a little closer to the situation enfolding in front of my eyes.
Ai'Arthit ask the freshman a question again
"Here Nong, If I do not give you this gear. What would you do"
I watched in anticipation to what we had rehearsed over and over. The student always responds with He did not know.
To my astonishment that is not what this young man said
"I will just take it"
He defiantly tried to not to say this loudly, but everyone is in the auditorium heard it.
My brain was shocked, but the real problem is my friend Ai'Arthit. He is not the most laid back kind of guy when it comes to talking back and he can definitely dish out some pretty nasty remarks when
provoked. I start to get worried as I step closer to the two young men.
"What do you mean"
With stone cold face the freshman responds
"If you do not give me gear. I will take it on my own"
In that moment I saw everything I was afraid of Ai'Arthit losing his cool. He grabbed that freshman by the collar.
"You say that again. You think you can get the gear from me"
"Easy"
"How are you going to do that"
I watched in horror as the freshman grabs Ai'Arthits hand and says
"People say that what's our lover(faen) things are like ours.. if I catch the wife.. then his gear becomes mine."
All Ai'Arthit could only muster saying
"what"
I could see that his brain was stupefied, not processing anything.
I took control and touched the head hazers shoulder looked at him and then at his hands. Ai'Arthit let go of the freshman's collar.
Obviously the freshman were all whispering about this, so I used the biggest voice I could muster
"Silent!"
In that moment you could hear a pin drop.
Ai'Arthit regained his senses
"Then I'll see if you can really do that, but for now the gear is still with me, I have the right to order you as a senior."
"Kongpob code 0062 jump squats 200 start now!!!"
"Khrap"
The remaining of the evening was uneventful, but I knew when I looked at Ai'Arthit that night there was a flame that was burning. I let out a sigh. This was not going to be an easy hazing year is it.
