Chapter 49

"Rose" James called out my name, bringing his hand forward and nervously i placed my hand on his. I was greeted by group of men, wearing neat,  business attire, smoking their cigar and holding some dark liquor on another hand. I swear if I had bumped into one of them in the street, I would have never imagine them to be a Mafia, they looked like a people from very privillege class. "You are the famous Rose" one of the men said, giving me a quick peck on my cheek, "you are very beautiful" the other one said giving me a quick hug. I know for a fact that these are the man who belongs to mafia, those people who kill people and try to dodge the government and the system, but the way i was welcomed somehow was able to comfort my beating heart. I turn towards James and he wasn't the James that i knew. He look very serious and very focus into their conversation, but every time we made an eye contact he would smile at me, rubbing my back with palm of his hand. This is business for them. I feel like i was getting involved in something that i shouldn't be, i recall the word James said this morning "you don't have to know any ins and outs, I don't want you to get involve in business"; "Gentlemen, if i could be excused" i informed, looking around nervously and i feel James breathing in relief. "Stay in my sight, all right" he whispered in my ear and i could see stare from the group of men i was standing around with. "I will have Mark following me" i mumbled trying to reassure him and he was pleased with my answer. "I want us to have a chat though with John" i reminded him about the deal he made earlier, "let me know when he is about to leave" he whispered again.

With Mark following me around I headed towards the table with a group of familiar face, "Jesus, do I have to make an appointment to see you" Lucy teased. We began to sip on some cocktails as i find Ana looking at me, i recalled her words from earlier, how my face remind her of John's betrayal. Those words were able to make me uncomfortable at my own engagement party. Lucy and Daisy continued with their silly jokes and i pretended to laugh, knowing how much Ana is hurting.

The night slowly started to turn darker, i can see few people getting tipsy, specially the girls i was sitting next to, Lucy and Daisy. "Maam, it's time for the announcement" Mark informed me, holding his air pod that were tucked inside of his ear, "yeah" i replied and walked with him towards where James was waiting for me.

We both smiled finally feeling each other presence, "i missed you" i murmured, recalling how uncomfortable i felt on that table, sitting right across to Ana. "Missed you more" he whispered, fixing my hair.

"Ladies and gentlemen" Jasper announced, "although we are all family here, i can't help but notice few of the new faces and would like to welcome them along with all the familiar faces that i have seen up to now. Tonight, is such a beautiful night; finally a day to mark up on my empty calendar" he said with a chuckle. " I met Rose few years ago and trust me i saw how smitten James was, he literally looked like a complete fool, with that weird smiley face, a giggle over nothing and finally after all this time he got some balls and proposed her" he said looking at me, he gave me a wink seeing how i was laughing at his words. "Anyway i would like to announce that my son James is engaged to this beautiful lady, who has filled our life with only laughter and happiness during this short period of time, i come to realise it is starting to sound more like a wedding speech so i will end it here, congratulations James and Rose" Jasper finished off his announcement and approached us, "Thank you Rose" he murmured and gave me a quick hug. I wonder what my dad would would have said if he was here tonight, if things were normal between us. I don't know if it's the thought of getting married or it has been distance between us, nowadays i seem to be missing them, a lot more than i expected.

I find John in a crowd, trying to get my attention. He signed language me saying he is about to leave and i asked him to stop. "John is leaving now" i whispered in James ear and he looked at John, as if he was murdering him with his intense stare.
