Nancy just wanted a quiet afternoon to herself after another tiring day at her collage. She knew the senior years were going to be hard but she didn't expect it to be as tiresome as this.
She collapsed onto the nearest bench. The evening was cold and the wind whipped at her red hair but the sun shine brightly overhead, warming up her face and making up for the chilli atmosphere.
Over by the other end of the park some kids were playing. Close to them sat a couple. The girl, whose blonde hair was visible from where Nancy was, was reading a book. The boy, strikingly familiar somehow, was content with just looking at her.
That's when things started getting out of control. When Nancy's day took on a whole new spin.
The older kids by the playground were starting to get bored. Nancy could tell what was about to happen next. How many times had she done it herself? It seemed ridiculously childish now.
They're was a lonely seven year old playing in the sand pit and the older kids were moving in towards him.
Nancy got up and started to walk towards them. She was not going to let this pass by under her nose.
The older boys were taunting the child now, calling him names, ripping away his bucket and kicking at the magnificent sandcastle he had built.
Nancy reached there just in time. She scowled at the older children. "Utterly disgusting." She said. "You should be ashamed of picking on a harmless seven year old. What are you thirteen or three?" They froze.
"Beat it." Nancy clarified for their minuscule brains.
That sent them running for their mommies.
Nancy kneeled down in front of the small boy who now had tears in his eyes as he watched the remains of his sandcastle been blown away by the wind. "Are you okay?" She asked him gently.
He nodded quietly.
"What's your name?" Nancy asked. "I'm Nancy."
"Tom." He replied.,
"Do you want to build another castle?" Nancy asked. "I'll help you."
The boy's eyes brightened and he handed her the red bucket in reply.

After a while of playing around, Tom's mother came back from the ice cream van, holding two ice cream cones. She'd been surprised at the sight of Nancy but had expressed her gratitude to her earnestly. She explained how Tom was always getting bullied and how he had no other friends.
Nancy had left them to themselves, knowing that he'd be safe with his mother.
On the way back, without her knowing, someone tapped her on the back. She flung around surprised and was met with familiar sea green eyes.
"Hey." He said with a smile. "Nancy Bobofit right?"
"Ye-yes. Do I know you?" she asked, quite taken aback.
The boy smirked. "You used to bully me and my friend back at Yancy."
"Yancy- Percy Jackson?" She realised. Her eyes widened. He had been so scrawny and weak. Now, he was taller and looked stronger.
"Yeah. That's me." He said. "I just wanted to say, that was really nice, what you did there."
"Thanks." She muttered. "I figured helping was worth more than hurting. Sorry for bullying you."
"Hey, no problem." Percy said. "You look different. Kinder and prettier." He said it as a compliment from a friend, nothing else.
"Thanks." She replied again.
"Well, I'd better get going." Percy said with a shrug. "Annabeth's waiting. Nice to see you again, Nancy." He waved and walked back before she could even ask him who Annabeth was.
But it wasn't long before she found out. Percy sat back down on the bench and draped an arm around the girl sitting there, still reading a book. He kissed her cheek and took her hand. They were talking about something and the girl finally put away her book. Percy grinned and gave her quick kiss.
In the sunlight, something glinted in the girl's finger. A silver ring.
