The helicopter was already starting to whir by the time the group arrived at the helipad, miles from the estate in a secret airport. The metal strips sliced through the air like knives, slowly building speed as the wind and sound grew. Hinata stuttered in her steps, gripping onto Sasuke's arm harder. She pressed her face against his arm, looking upward with eyes full of nerves. Sasuke patted her hand reassuringly, looking onward to the noisy vehicle. As they approached the helicopter, Misa held onto Charlie's hand, stooping down with Gaara to hug their child between them. As they stood again, Gaara cupped his wife's face with more tenderness than Sasuke had expected him to show. Gaara smiled, pressing his lips to his wife in a slow, firm kiss. When they parted, their noses still touching, Sasuke could see Gaara speaking, but the sound of the aircraft drowned out his words. Misa nodded, and picked up Charlie to rest on her hip. Gaara kissed his son's head, and then the two were off toward the helicopter, Misa ducking down to stoop into the seats. She turned back once Charlie was settled, beckoning to Hinata.
Hinata stood stock still. Sasuke could see her lip quivering, feel her knuckles tighten around his sleeve. "Hey," Sasuke nearly shouted. "It's gonna be okay."
Hinata stared up at him, and buried herself in his arms. After a lengthy embrace, but still too short of a time, Hinata said, "Goodbye, Sasuke."
He squeezed her tightly, putting more energy into his hug than he ever had. "I'll see you soon, baby." When they parted, Sasuke thumbed away the tears falling down her cheeks. He kissed each wet stream, and then covered Hinata's lips with his own.
"Be good for me, okay?"
Hinata nodded, and reluctantly let go of Sasuke. She turned away from him, and walked toward the helicopter.Sasuke watched her retreat, memorizing every inch of her profile, every strand of her hair, every gentle swish of her hips. He wished nothing more than to follow her, to jump on the helicopter and be whisked away from his nightmare. But, sighing, he just waved. She turned back around to him, smiling sweetly as she paused, and lifted her hand to wave back.
Then, she fell.
Sasuke was so confused, did she trip on something? There was nothing at her feet. What could have made her recoil so quickly and tumble to the concrete? It wasn't until he saw the way she collapsed, the way her back arched and twisted in shock, and the strange formation of red on her chest that hadn't been there before, that he realized what had happened, and his heart sank further into his body until it morphed into a black hole.
Kiba screamed, "Sniper! Get down!"
Everyone ran back to the black SUVs that had taken them to the pad, pulling out their weapons in defense. Suddenly, there were more vehicles pulling in- how did they get there so fast?
Sasukw couldn't see what was happening. The dull sound of shouting and bullets flying past his head ringing in his ears. He just walked forward, staring down at the slump of a person that was Hinata.
He fell to his knees, scooping her up in his arms. "Hina?"
Hinata's eyes were parted, lazily drooping as if she were just falling asleep. Sasuke grabbed her face, tugging at her cheeks, still warm from the tears that had just fallen moments ago. She hung limp in his arms; she didn't reach for him, didn't call his name.
Sasuke was so confused. She would wake up soon, right?
Someone was calling for him over his shoulder. He thought he heard it, but he kept looking at Hinata's face. Then, his eyes fell down to her chest. It was covered in blood, fresh red seeping into the fine knit of Misa's sweater. Her heart- her heart that belonged to him, her heart that was filled with his love, the heart that he was planning to serve for the rest of his life- was seeping out over his hands as they rested on the hole in her back.
