I froze instantly, even holding my breath, so I wouldn't give away our location. "Thank god for tinted windows." I told myself as I watched the men descend the stairs and hurry down a back alley about a block away. I breathed a sigh of relief once they were out of view. They hadn't seen us, but they had found Yuki's location in just a couple months. I kicked myself internally for not moving her sooner. What should I do now? She can't stay here, she'll be dead by morning. I don't have another place set for her yet.
"What would you have me do sir?" The voice pulled me back to reality. I looked into the rearview mirror and to the man who had spoken. I could only come up with one solution.
"To the estate please." I ordered. The man nodded and the car began to move. It wasn't the most optimal situation, although, I'm sure Fuyumi will be thrilled. I looked back at the sleeping girl next to me. "I'll keep you safe, I promise." I whispered as I began to gently stroke her hair. Why was this girl so important to me? Why was it always so hard to hide my emotions with her? There was something there but I couldn't put my finger on it. About a half an hour later we had almost reached our destination. Yuki still hadn't woken up and I was beginning to worry. She had slept most of the afternoon away, but why? I gently placed my hand on her forehead, detecting a slight temperature. It had been chilly outside today and she hadn't been wearing a coat when I found her on the roof or in the city. I slowly reached into a compartment under the seat and pulled out a blanket. I laid it across Yuki's back and she snuggled into it. "The poor girl was probably half frozen" I thought to myself as I tucked the blanket tightly around her. She smiled in her sleep and whispered.
"Thank you Nina." I wondered who this Nina could be, but I was interrupted by the car slowly pulling to a stop in front the estate. Not worrying about either of our school things, I gently eased myself out of the car, being careful not to wake Yuki. I gently lifted her from the car and slowly walked to the open door, where a maid and Fuyumi were both staring.
"Kyoya, what's going on?" Fuyumi questioned a little louder than was necessary.
"Shhh!" I instantly urged Fuyumi to lower her voice. "All I can say for now is that this girl is my responsibility and that she'll be staying here for the time being." I directed my attention to the maid standing next to her. "Please send for Dr. Yamaku immediately." The maid hurried away to do as I had instructed and I turned to take Yuki to upstairs to a guest room, with Fuyumi hurrying behind me asking question after question in hushed tones.
"How do you know her?" Fuyumi waited for an answer as I silently climbed the stairs. "How long will she be here?" She continued when I didn't give an answer. I stepped onto the second floor and made my way to the guest room next to my own. "Is she sick?" I pushed open the door with my foot and walked to the bed, gently placing Yuki down and pulling the blankets up to her chin. She instinctively curled herself snuggly into them, making me smile just a little. Realizing that I hadn't heard a question in a while, I stole a glance at Fuyumi. She stared at me with an odd expression and I motioned for her to come with me. We left the room, slowly pushing the door closed behind us.
"Fuyumi," I suddenly spoke. "What I am about to tell you is a secret. You may not speak of this to anyone until I say, understood?" Fuyumi hurriedly nodded and I led her to a sitting space not too far from Yuki's door. I didn't want to be too far from her. We sat and Fuyumi stared at me expectantly, waiting for answers. "The situation is a little complicated." I admitted. "This girl is a star witness in a case being organized against Kei Ito. I am personally in charge of her safety and, to be perfectly honest with you, I've been doing a lousy job." I stared at the floor as I continued. "She's managed to disappear from me twice today and when I took her home, two men had discovered her hiding place." I looked at Fuyumi and she was staring at me attentively, soaking in every last detail. "When she ran off today she wasn't wearing anything more than that school uniform and she was outside for about half the day. I'm afraid that she is sick, although to what extent I'm not sure." I began to rub my temples in frustration and the look on Fuyumi's face changed.
