Gabriel wasn't ready.
A newly-adult animal hybrid who usually struggles at getting out of bed in the morning expected to survive in a frigid environment with nothing but a house and a few tools?
Yeah. That wasn't happening.
However, his Guide named Andrew was here to help him.
He explained some things and tips. First off, unbeknownst to Jesse, recent technology allows people in Terraria to respawn after death. They just lose a large sum of their pocket money, of which Gabriel had none. The best first-day move is to rush to the Hallow biome, chop down some of the Pearlwood trees, and make Pearlwood armor, the most protecting basic wooden armor available.
Without the risk of death, Gabriel was slightly more confident, but seeing as he had to use wooden armor to protect against hardmode mobs, he didn't have high hopes.
He started moving towards the Western part of the world, hoping to find the Hallow. What he ended up finding was a lot more dangerous: the Hardmode Desert. He climbed a massive hill to find a gigantic divot and an army of giant scorpions barreling towards him. Out of instinct, he tried to run away, but the scorpions chased him down. He felt himself rapidly getting more and more damaged, and right when he was leaving this mortal world, right when he was pushed to the verge of death, he woke up, in the snow in front of the house, as if it was all a bad dream.
Huh, Gabriel thought. Andrew wasn't kidding.
Lucky sneaky fox. I never got that "respawning" luxury.
Gabriel's escapade to try to find the Hallow was the true embodiment of "Yolo." I lost count of the desert deaths. Every time he climbed that cursed hill, another mob would climb out of that hole. And even in the odd chance he slipped past the mobs, he would slip into the hole, dying to fall damage. Each time his empty wallet getting even more empty than before.
After ages of failed attempts and net loss of copper coins, he finally decided to try going East. Over a large snowy hill and past a large pond, he found the dark and grotesque Corruption biome. Now, the Corruption was dangerous, even before Hardmode, but Gabriel took a few suicide missions and made it to the Hallowed land that lied beyond the darkness.
Striking his axe to several trees, he got enough Pearlwood to make a bow and armor. Finally, he found his first early upgrades: slightly stronger wooden armor than the standard, an essentially useless bow and no arrows, a holy hammer that wasn't necessarily designed for combat, and a magic gun without any mana.
Like I said, he didn't have high hopes.
After days and nights of deforestation and the occasional death, Gabriel built a couple of houses to house some townsfolk.
Now all he needed to do was find some townsfolk.
The Guide spoke about a wizard tied up deep within the caverns and a merchant that would be drawn in by tons of money. Gabriel didn't have money so he decided to go for that wizard fellow. Going down the underground desert or Corruption was a death waiting to happen, so he decided to go with ol' reliable: just dig down anywhere and hope for the best.
He eventually ran into a bunch of iron, a metric ton of gold, and he finally found the wizard.
He cut the ropes holding the wizard with his Copper Shortsword and freed the Greum the Wizard.
"Thank you for saving me, friend! The bondage was getting uncomfortable."
Gabriel chatted with Greum for a while and moved on to mine some more materials. His plan was to mine in a way so he could get down easily, but not break his legs.
When he cleaned out the small cave and returned to where he found the wizard, he was gone.
The heck did he go? Gabriel thought. Unbeknownst to him, villagers move into and travel to vacant housing during the nighttime. I like to think that 7:30 is their curfew.
He kept heading lower down, and he found a huge open cave. What he was perplexed about is that the water was a light shade of crimson, resembling blood. He swore that water wasn't naturally that color. He didn't have time to think about it because a giant tortoise knocked him off of his vantage point, sending him into the pit of Vikings mimics and flinxs. He died instantly sending him home to find hundreds of zombies and Possessed Armor banging on his door. After frantically baiting the enemies away from the door, he rushed indoors and slammed the door behind him.
Andrew told Gabriel that a blood moon was out, meaning mobs spawn heaps more frequently, drop unique items, and are a bit more dangerous. He was going to talk about how they can open doors, but at that point a Possessed Armor had broken in and Gabriel was dead...again...
Like I said, he didn't have high hopes.
Buddy the Elf once said that the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.
However, in Gabriel's case, it's more like this:
"The best way to spread Christmas fear is screaming loud for all to hear."
