Winter...
After my work was all done, I decided to go see Alby. I miss that shank. He would always come around to see if I am doing my work. Today, no one did. No one made those lame jokes. Or asked me if I am sure the thing I am building at the moment won't crash. Those were his usual annoying questions. And I never thought I could miss them so much. It seems so normal. Like an everyday thing. And then when it just doesn't happen, you feel like part of your daily routine is gone.
That's why I went to see him. It seems to be the only way possible that will allow me to be with him in some way. It was already dark when I made it to the med-hut. I opened the door and walked into the room where I remember they put Alby. Clint was there watching over him so he won't hurt himself if he wakes up by chance.
"Hey," I greeted quietly. Clint looked up, his brown eyes tired, and his light brown hair falling into his face. "We can switch if you want, I can watch him for a while," I said, already taking a seat on the chair on the other side of Alby's bed.
"You sure you want to be here? It's not a nice sight." I only dismissed Clint's worries with a wave of my hand. I handled waiting for my sister, boyfriend, and Alby to come back from the maze overnight. I can handle sitting next to Alby now. I know it won't be easy. It is clear as a day that Alby is slowly dying here. But we can't do anything. We have no supplies to save him. And if the shucking box won't go back, we won't have any supplies whatsoever.
"You see man, it's a mess in here," I said, glancing down at the twitching body of my friend. The dark veins are slightly alarming, but nothing I haven't seen before. "You gotta wake up. We need you. I don't know what are we going to do next. Both Newt and I are lost. We're out of ideas of how to keep others calm. We need you here, Alby." I whispered the last part quietly. Suddenly the doors opened and in walked Newt, Summer, Thomas, and the new girl.
"That is out of the question." Newt seemed to be quite distressed by something that Thomas told him earlier. Summer was trying to calm him down but it wasn't working much.
"But it can help Alby," Thomas argued and that got my attention.
"What?" I stood up from the chair and walked over to them slowly. Newt glanced at me and handed me a vial with some blue liquid. "What's that?" I asked, skeptically scanning the contents of the flask.
"It came in with Teresa," Thomas said, pointing towards the girl behind him. Teresa? Okay then. Still looks like a crazy chick to me but, by all means.
"We don't even know what this stuff is. We don't know who sent it. Or why it came up here with you." Newt started naming all the things that were wrong in this situation. Like why are we trusting someone that just comes in, in the middle of the month and starts throwing rocks at us? Shucking rocks!
"For all we know, this thing could kill him," I said angrily. I don't want these two Newbies to endanger the life of one of my shucking best friends.
"He's already dying." Thomas snapped and I felt like I could punch him, but Summer stopped me by standing in between me and Newt, to be close to both of us, just in case. "Look at him. How could this possibly make it any worse?" I looked back at Alby, to see him all sweaty and obviously in pain. "Come on, it's worth a try."
I held eye contact with Newt. We were both more or less defeated now. We had no more options.
"All right," I said handing the vial to Newt. He glanced down at it and gave it to Thomas.
"Do it." Thomas nodded and pushed past us to get to Alby. We all turned to see what will happen. Summer grabbed my hand while her other was holding Newt. She was multitasking in being supportive. This woman is just a ray of positivity.
