Summer...
This whole plan of how to escape had one hole. Not everyone here was a Runner and was able to run as fast. We already lost Chuck almost three times because he wasn't able to keep up. Newt was naturally falling behind because of the limp and some guys were even scared of the maze so they kept on pushing and shoving one another.
"Thomas, we need to stop we can't run like this, we are going to lose someone," I said to him sternly. I kept on glancing back at Newt who was struggling a bit. I wasn't handling myself the best with the gash in my ankle but it was healing and that is just an outside wound. Not something like Newt has.
"Alright," Thomas stopped the group and scanned it with his eyes to see if everyone was here. "Um...we should form a better formation here...um..."
"Alright shanks, me and Summer will go in the back so no one will be falling behind. We know the maze like the back of our hands so there is not a possibility of us getting lost. Thomas and Teresa are in the front, leading the way. Winter, you will go somewhere in the middle and you will try to have Chuck always in front of you. The rest of you just keep in the line and don't start freaking out." Minho divided everyone quite simply and no one could oppose it.
He looked at me asking if I am satisfied and I nodded. We waited for everyone to start running before we lined ourselves in the back. I kept looking around, just in case. The place where we were nearing looked quite close to the one where Ben got stung. The possibility of Grievers lurking around is very high then.
We run towards one of the walls and hid behind it. I do have a feeling that we will run into one of those shucking beasts soon. I stood at the far end of the line. Just looking around. I am the eyes of the team right now. Keeping everyone safe like this.
"Is it a Griever?" I heard Chuck ask at the front.
"Yeah," Thomas answered solemnly with a grim face. Oh just great.
"Summer." I got called to the front and stood next to Winter. She and I shared a look already knowing the question that will continue.
"You two will help Teresa with opening the doors." Oh wait, that was a statement? I don't think so.
"Excuse me, did you just order me to do something?" Winter asked, almost horrified.
"No...I mean...yeah...kinda."
"Let me solve this," I said shushing Thomas. "We are fighting with you. Winter will have my back while protecting Chuck and Teresa and I will be upfront with you guys because I saw Grievers more times than any of you shanks and I finally need to get some revenge for my ankle and the hole in my favorite shirt." I said already pulling out my machete...well, one of Newt's that I took from him without him knowing but what does it matter right?
"You take this, Chuck. Stay behind us." Minho said handing Chuck the key to opening the door. Poor Chuck looked mortified.
"It's okay. Just stick with me." Teresa said sweetly while putting her dark hair in a ponytail. Winter next to me rolled her eyes and put her hand on Chuck's shoulder.
"Don't worry, I'll be there too." She told him holding up the spear she had in hand.
"Once we're through, it will activate and the door will open. We stay close, we stick together...we get through this. We get out now...or we die trying." We all nodded to Thomas motivating speech. "Ready?" He asked hitting his spear against the ground. All of us pulled out our swords or spears and nodded. "All right. Let's go!"
We run at the Griever with a battle cry. The creature looked quite confused at first but then charged at us full speed. I was running behind Winter. She had a spear she didn't have to get too close when attacking it. We threw the Griever to the side and the people with spears tried to push it over the edge. One boy got thrown off the bridge. I didn't get a good look at him so I didn't notice who it was.
