It was a summer day in 2025. The wind blew past, and Grace and I raced each other down the street, my dog chasing after. Thomas was struggling to keep up and yelling my name as we ran. "Reagan, don't let him catch us!" Grace had said, giggling. "I won't, Maci! You know we are faster than him!" We laughed as we practically flew into her house, running inside to her room. That night we played board games, watched anime, and talked for hours instead of sleeping like her mom told us to. We were watching Death Note and we laughed as Light ate the potato chip. Maci's mom barged in and yelled at us to turn the t.v. off and go to bed. We both said, "Awwwwwwww." But she gave us the do-what-I-say-or-die look and we obliged. As we settled into bed, a light shone outside, and a few seconds later, we heard a loud BOOM. Maci and I screamed, naturally. We didn't know it at the time, but the parasites had started their invasion. By sending bombs with their spores in them down to earth, they would explode, sending the spores in every direction, infecting humans. Maci and I had watched the explosion with interest as Maci's mom ran into Maci's room, grabbing our arms and running as fast as she could. She told us to run, and keep running. She went to warn all the neighbors, who were watching outside. And we did run. We ran and ran and didn't look back. That was the last time Maci and I ever saw her mother. We had found my brother later, in a refugee shelter near our neighborhood. My mother had told him to run too. I didn't know where she was, or where the rest of my family was either. They were just.. Gone

My eyes open as I wake up curled in a ball. I'm not in my bed though, I'm in some kind of glass tube. Oh. I think. This is what Maci- No. Grace, meant by examination tube. I let my eyes close again as I blink multiple times, before rubbing them. I think they were normal now.

"Oh good.. You're awake." I hear Grace's voice on the other side of the glass. She lets out a sigh of relief. "Are you okay? Are you hungry at all? I know you didn't get dinner last night.." I look away slowly. I can't look her in the eyes. I almost killed her last night.. How is she acting like everything is okay..?

"Reagan.." she said.

"Do you remember that night when we saw the explosion.." I whispered. "Well.. yes but Reagan-" I interrupted her. "Do you think that's when I was infected..." Grace sighed. "Reagan.." "Stop calling me that." She blinks. "What?" I glare at her. "I said, stop calling me that." She inhales deeply. "RheaChan. They took tests before we took off to make sure we were not infected. I think one of the scientists had it, because you were clean when we took it." I nod. "Grace." I say. "Just call me Rhea from now on. It's easier for me. I left my life behind when we left. That means my name as well.." She nods. "Okay," She walks up to the glass and crouches down in front of it, looking me dead in the eyes. "I promise, I'll fix this. I'll fix you. Okay, Rhea?" I suddenly get a feeling of hope. A tear falls off my cheek as I answer.

"Okay."
