Daniel Drake P.O.V

I stepped off the train and looked around as the many men and women wandered to and fro, headed to their next destination of the day.

I stopped for a moment to try and figure out what mine was, but I came up empty handed. For once in my life, nothing was required of me. Well, that is until the contract with my record label comes back into effect. I don't need to worry about that right now though.

I pulled my leather jacket tighter over my shoulders and began to walk for the street, going to hail a taxi. I stopped on the edge of the sidewalk and began to wave one down, to no avail.

"Guess I'm walking," I sighed to myself.

I began to make my way down the sidewalk, my eyes scanning over the street signs as I made my way uptown. People were still rushing every which way, even though it was later in the evening.

I made a turn onto a side street and began to read the signs on the buildings until my eyes landed on mine. I pushed open the doors and walked up to the front desk and rang the bell. A thin older man walked out of the back room and up to the desk, placing his glasses on the tip of his nose.

I watched as his eyes wandered from my dark brown hair, to my leather jacket, to my black ripped jeans, and down to my black combat boots. He raised an eyebrow quizzically.

"Sir, you do realize this is not a...hotel?" he said slowly.

"I'm well aware, thank you," I snarked back. "My name's Daniel Drake."

The man cast one last glance over the top of his glasses before looking down to the computer. He typed in a few things, then his eyebrows raised in surprise.

There it is.

"M-Mr. Drake?" he said. "You're the one who just bought the penthouse."

"Guilty," I said. "I guess that's the perks of being a famous rockstar. Can I get my key?"

"Of course, of course," he said, as he shuffled through some things on the desk.

After a brief moment he held out a small key ring. I smiled a little and took it.

"Thank you," I said.

"No, thank you," he said. "Have a nice day, Mr. Drake."

I nodded and walked away from the desk, stepping into the nice elevator. I pressed the top button and the elevator began to move up the tower.

A minute or so later the elevator stopped and the doors slid open to a hallway with a door at the end of it. I walked over and used the key to unlock it, then pushed it open to the entryway inside.

There were tons upon tons of boxes stacked in the small entryway, forming a maze. I sent my belongings ahead of time, so I didn't have to move with them with me.

I tiptoed around the boxes and made my way into the kitchen, pouring a glass of water. I walked into the living room, where the furniture I had bought was already in place. I sat down on the couch and flicked on the tv.

I absentmindedly watched the news as my mind wandered over what to do in the oncoming weeks. I sighed and shifted to lay down.

I began to feel tired, but I perked up as the news began to display footage of a building. There were gunshots going off left and right, lighting up the windows. I read the address at the bottom of the screen.

I sighed and stood up, walking over to the panoramic windows. The building was only a few down from mine. I ran a hand through my hair as I mulled over the idea.

"What's the worse that could happen?" I said.

I reached into the marked box and pulled out my black mask, placing it over my eyes, then tightened the laces on my boots.

I made my way out onto the balcony and looked down towards the building.

"Just this once, Dani," I told myself.

I leaped off the balcony towards the building next to mine, but just before I could make contact I twisted my head back and let out a short Canary Cry. The force slowed me down and allowed me to land in a roll before continuing to run down the street, over the rooftops.

When I was one building away I leaped across the gap and burst into the building through a window. I was facing towards the backs of at least twenty men, all holding weapons. They turned around towards me as they heard my entrance.

"Shit," I said.

I sucked in a quick breath and shot a cry towards the men holding the long rifles, then launched myself into the fray.

I took down several of the men with ease, before another door was busted down, catching the attention of some of the men.

I focused on the three that were surrounding me. I kicked one back, then hit the other with a palm strike in the jaw, he fell unconscious. I ducked under a swing of a bat from the last one, then swiped his legs out from under him. He fell on his chest and I grabbed his hair, knocking him out.

I turned to the other man who had burst into the building. He was wearing a shiny red helmet and a brown leather jacket.

He was brutally attacking the other men using a knife and handguns. This must've been the guy who had caused all this.

"Hey!" I shouted.

He shot the last two men, before turning to me. He instinctively raised a pistol at me, but I wasn't fazed.

"The hell do you think you're doing?" I said.

"Who the fuck are you?" he said.

"Who am I? Who are you? You just killed eight people!"

"The name's Red Hood," he said. "And believe it or not, I was here a long time before you."

"Well, I'm here now," I said. "You don't get off that easy anymore."

"Try and stop me," he said.

I heard a click, causing me to immediately release a Cry. Just as it left my mouth there was a bang. I saw a bullet streaking towards me, but as the sound waves of my Cry struck it, it shattered.

When I stopped my scream, the Hood was making a run for it. I made chase.

"Stop!" I shouted.

"Never!" he cheered.

I followed after him through the abandoned building, down stairwells, through scaffolding, and half-built walls.

When we reached another room, I had him cornered. He whirled on me and even through the mask I knew he was smiling at me.

I smirked a little back and cocked my head.

"I suggest you surrender," I said.

"I don't know what that word means," he said, before taking a step back off the edge of the building.

I darted forward to try and catch him, but he was already over that edge. I looked down to see a window cleaner's platform, dangling several yards below me. As soon as we locked eyes he ran back into the building.

I dropped down onto the platform, then back into the building, but he was already gone. I sighed and ran a hand through my hair.

"Shit," I cursed.

I whirled to the window as blue and red lights flashed. I made a run for the back of the building, sneaking out before the cops saw me.

I made it back into my new apartment with minimal damage and a few strange glances from the doorman. I sighed and kicked off my boots then moved to pull my jacket off. I winced a bit at the sore muscles then tossed my jacket onto the back of my couch.

I wandered into my room where furniture was already sitting in its correct spot. I tossed my mask onto the dresser, then pulled my shirt off as I walked towards the bed.

The cool air covered my smooth, toned chest as I pulled the covers away. There was a faint tattoo of three canaries on my chest going up to my shoulder. I flopped down into bed, pulling the covers over myself and letting the darkness consume me.
