Jason Todd P.O.V
I kicked a thug backwards as he came towards me, then swung my arm around backwards and pistol whipped the one coming up behind me.
I tossed a quick glance over to where Dani was handling three others. He kicked one backwards, then swept another's feet out from beneath him. He whirled on the last one and used his Cry to throw him across the lot.
I shot one in the knee that was trying to sneak up on him.
He scanned the fallen man, then turned to me giving me a small wink.
"Thanks," he said.
I shrugged in response.
We fell into synced fighting again as more of them came. It was easy, familiar, and comfortable - fighting with Dani, that is.
"How you holding up?" I said to him mid-fight.
"Is now really the best time for a checkup?" he said as he sent one reeling my way, I slugged him across the jaw, knocking him out cold.
"I worry, Dani," I said as I popped off a few shots.
I heard his dulled Cry through my, now sonic-protection upgraded, helmet.
"I know you do," he said. "And I appreciate it, but I'm telling you that you don't need to."
"Just don't be afraid to let me know if you need a break."
I heard one of the thugs surrounding us laugh.
"What? Is the little birdie getting worn out?" he mocked.
"Watch it!" I snapped at him, then kicked him towards Dani.
"You should watch who you mock," Dani said before releasing a Cry, sending the thug flying through the air and crashing into a parked car.
After we wiped out the last few we ended up standing right in front of each other.
"Behind you," we said in sync.
We both jumped into action, trading places and taking out the final two thugs who were trying to sneak up on us. I fired two shots into his legs as Dani used his Cry.
We turned back to each other after we were done. I chuckled a little as Dani gave me a goofy grin.
"Come on, we've got some interrogating to do," I said waving him after me.
I walked over to the leader and lifted him by the front of his shirt, then held him against the side of the weapons truck. He groaned in pain from his beating.
"Where is Black Mask?" I growled.
"Why's it matter?" he muttered. "You're gonna beat me to hell either way. I ain't tellin' you shit..."
"I don't know," I said. "My associate, here, can be pretty convincing..."
"Talk," Dani said lowly.
The man didn't respond, so I held him against the van a little tighter. Dani took a step closer to him.
"Don't make me say it louder," he warned.
The thug's eyes flicked over to Dani fearfully, knowing what he could do.
"I don't have anything to fear," he said. "You don't kill, you're a hero."
"He may not kill, but I do," I growled.
"I'll take death by gunshot," he said. "Wouldn't be the first time I've been shot."
"I turn the volume up to thirteen and your brain liquifies. That doesn't sound pleasant, does it?"
The man looked over to Dani again fearfully. He didn't say anything for a moment, then widened his eyes as Dani shrugged and took a breath.
"Wait!" he called out.
"I don't know exactly where he is," he said. "I don't have that much clearance, but I know that the new headquarters is somewhere on Founder's-Founder's Island, I'm sure of it."
"You better not be lying," Dani muttered.
"I swear!" he said.
Dani met my eyes and nodded. I head butted him and knocked him out cold.
"Come on, Jay," Dani said to me. "Let's head out."
I stepped into the apartment behind Dani, then kicked the door shut. We walked over to the kitchen, Dani flicked on the lights as we did so. I set the paper bags down on the counter and Dani got us some drinks out of the fridge. I reached into the bag and pulled out the burgers and fries.
"Well, it's only been about a month since Sionis escaped us, and we've actually made some good progress," he said.
I nodded as I bit into my burger.
"Yeah, hopefully once we catch him we'll be able to lock him away for good."
I furrowed my eyebrows as Dani gave me a smile and shook his head slowly.
"What?" I said.
He reached forward across the counter and his fingers grabbed my chin, steadying my face. I felt his thumb swipe across the corner of my mouth and pull away some ketchup.
I blushed a little and took another bite of my burger. Dani began to eat his as well.
We ate mostly in silence, but I could tell that something was bothering him. He wanted to talk to me about something, but I had no idea what.
"Jason?" he said.
I swallowed my bite and looked up to him.
"Hm?" I said as I took a drink of the water he poured me.
"When are you gonna trust me enough to talk to me about what happened to you all those years ago?" he asked quietly.
"What?" I asked, even though I knew exactly what he was speaking of.
"When you were taken," he said slowly. "Come on, Jason, you know what I mean. You won't let me look at you shirtless too close or for longer than a few seconds before you hide yourself. I can't say 'His' name without upsetting you for the rest of the night. You wake up in a cold sweat almost every night, and the first thing you do is look for a pulse. Your fingers shake when you try to do stitches. And you're a 23 year old who's terrified of thunderstorms. Yet, I don't know the reason for any of this. And I don't know why I don't know either."
I cared deeply for Dani. And I know he's frustrated, but I could just never bring myself to talk about it. Besides, he doesn't tell me everything either.
"How'd you get your powers?" I said blatantly.
He took a breath to speak, then looked away from my eyes. This was one of the things he never tells me.
"How do you know Dinah? And why do you keep men's clothes that aren't your size in your end stand? Why won't you talk about your family or tell me why you left your old city?"
Dani couldn't answer any of these and he refused to meet my eyes.
"It's not that I don't trust you enough, Dani," I said, walking over to the other side of the island and placing my hands on his arms. "I trust you more than anyone else I know. I don't trust anyone the way I trust you, but...sometimes there's just things I don't like to talk about, okay?"
He nodded slowly and finally met my eyes again. He smiled a little up at me and pushed himself onto his tip toes to press his lips to mine. I hummed into the kiss and pressed deeper, then pulled away after a moment.
"Now, come on," I said returning to my seat. "I'm hungry and tired as hell and these burgers aren't going to finish themselves."
I heard Dani laugh behind me as I dug into my meal again.
