Ch. 16

Dani Drake P.O.V

I laid awake staring at the ceiling, in my own bed for a change.

I hadn't slept much in the past week and it showed. My eyelids were incredibly heavy, but I couldn't fall asleep.

I turned my head and looked at the spot of the bed where Jason slept. I could just barely see the indents on the mattress that his body left. I reached out as if he was there, my fingers hovering over the bed, then I pulled my hand back to myself.

I sighed and tossed the covers aside, standing up and walking into the kitchen. I poured myself a glass of water, then absently scrolled through my phone at the island.

I jumped and whirled around as there was a fast knock at my door. I tensed my muscles and walked over to the door, slowly opening it. I relaxed as I saw Barry on the other side.

"Hey," he said tiredly.

"Uh, hi," I said. "What's up?"

"Can I spend the night? I just got back from a mission, but Iris and I had an argument before I left. I'm not ready to go home yet."

I smiled sadly and stepped aside to let him in.

"Clothes in the bottom drawer of the endstand, right?" he said as he already headed that way.

"Yeah," I said.

"Woah, what're all these boxes?" he said as he changed in my room.

"...they're Jason's."

"Oh, yeah, I forgot. Where is he?"

"I don't know," I said.

"Ah, one of those nights? Out on a mission, you have no idea where he's at or if he's even alive. Can't sleep or eat? Yeah, talk to Iris about it, she's that way all the time, you'd proba-"

"He's not on mission, Bare. I don't where he's at, truly. Last time I saw him was in Colorado, where we had a bad fight. I don't think he'll be coming around again anytime soon."

"Oh," he said as he came back out of my room and leaned against the island opposite of me. "When's the last time you got a full night's sleep?"

"Not since before Colorado..."

He sighed lightly and gripped my shoulder reassuringly.

"Come here," he said quietly.

My eyes felt heavy as he guided me into the room. I could barely stay awake as he sat me down on my side of the bed and laid me down.

"You need sleep, Dani," he said.

"I can't..." I mumbled as he pulled the covers over me.

I was barely conscious enough to feel the bed dip as he laid down in Jason's spot.

"Try," he said quietly.

"I...will..."

After he laid down it didn't take long for me to fall asleep, my eyelids finally falling shut.

When I woke up my eyes slowly opened, stinging as the light burned them. I looked away and rolled over to see Barry fast asleep on his side, facing away from me.

"Thanks, Bare," I whispered.

I stood up and stretched my muscles, then walked out of the room and to the kitchen. I started to cook breakfast, then jumped as the door slammed open and Barry was shirtless tugging on his supersuit.

"Gotta go! Hal needs my help," he said.

I waved him off and chuckled a little.

"Don't worry about me, go save the world."
